Suh Young Eun is one of the most underrated female singers in Korea. She doesn’t often come out to promote her songs, yet they are still popular, especially among more mature fans. Her album sales are also steady. While her more famous works may come from drama OSTs and remake albums, her studio albums are just as good, if not better.

 

 

Like many Korean singers these days, she is releasing a mini-album instead of a full album. Unlike her recent albums "Happily Ever After", "Be My Sweet Heart", "Sunny Side Of My Heart" which you can tell from the titles have a happy theme, most of the songs on this mini-album have a sad theme, which ironically fits Suh Young Eun’s voice better, in my opinion.

 

 

This mini-album has five songs, two of which are duets, including the title song "Goodbye" (track 3). "Goodbye" is a collaboration with male singer Han Kyung Il, who is also underrated. This song has an attractive piano intro. It starts out quite plain, but the melody really picks up in the chorus part. This style of ballads was the trend in the 80s and 90s, yet we don’t hear that often nowadays. Both Suh Young Eun and Han Kyung Il were born with an emotional voice, which is a perfect fit for this song. Watch the MV and their live performance @ Yoon Do Hyun Love Letter above.

 

 

Another duet (with Hong Kyung Min) is "Love Ends Like This", which has a similar style to "Goodbye". Hong’s husky voice is able to provide a different feel to this song. Either duet could have been the title song of the album and they are equally good.

 

 

Track 1 "What Am I To Do" is Suh Young Eun’s solo ballad. Perhaps it is a good introduction of what fans can expect from this album, as it precedes both duets. The last two songs offer a different theme. "First Love" is a rock ballad which reminds us of "Angel" from her 4th album. The last track "Easy Talk" is a mid-tempo rock ballad which has an oldie style. The chorus part reminds me of Carpenters’ songs.

 

 

Even though this album only has five songs, each song has its own quality and is worth listening. I have collected all Suh Young Eun’s releases since her 3rd album. This mini-album certainly won’t disappoint her fans. Perhaps I am biased, but I’d say even if you a not a fan, you should check out this mini-album. In my opinion, Korean music needs more singers like Suh Young Eun, who really knows how to appreciate music.
