Monthly Top 10 K-pop Album Sales: July 2008

With her beauty as well as her fun, yet catchy songs, Hyo Lee has hit the top spot for July this year. She’s the first female soloist to hit #1 so far and already has the highest one-week sales for any female group or artiste on the 2008 chart. The title song, U-Go-Girl, has burned the charts and it looks likely that she will surpass the sales of her second album. Second is last week’s top hitters, Brown Eyes. It looks as though their album will be the next to hit the wonderful 100,000-copy mark as they are only less than 12,000 off. In third spot this week is the legendary boyband, Shinhwa. It looks like the recent release of the repackaged version of their album has boosted its sales by quite a lot. They are currently holding the top spot for highest-selling album of 2008. Not far behind them is another boyband, SS501, whose mini-album has garnered some attention. They are supposedly releasing a full-length album later in the year, so this might be a good indication of future sales. Rounding off the top 5 is You Hee Yeol, also known as Toy. Toy’s last release the previous winter proved to be quite a hit, so hopefully this summer album will sell more.

Cool are in sixth with their latest album. It’s definitely not easy in the Korean music industry to release more than ten albums, so hopefully this is a sign for coming releases. Their sales are still going strong after all these years. One of 2008’s most popular girl groups, Davichi, are back again with a new album, although it’s just a repackaged version of their first. The title track, Love & War, has proved to be a strong summer hit, so strong sales may continue into August. With the success of the song, So Hot, it’s no surprise that the Wonder Girls are still charting in the top 10. Even though it’s a single, they’ve pulled off amazingly strong sales. At a surprising ninth is the popular trot singer, Jang Yoon Jung. Her first 2 albums were quite successful, so if she shows stability, she might do just as well. Last place for the top-10 sales of this month is SG Wannabe, who are holding on very well. Their sales are very strong, even after quite a few months, so it’s possible that they will sell 100,000 copies.
