Having debuted just last year, the five-member idol band, FT Island, have been very successful with hit after hit such as “Love Sick” – their debut number – to “Lying Love”, released just this year. Just two months after the release of their sophomore album Colorful Sensibility, the band has returned with a Part II, consisting of six rock ballads composed and written by hit artistes including Jo Young Soo and An Young Min.

The principle track is “Heaven”, track 2 of the album. It starts off with an energetic and rhythmical violin arrangement which increases in speed and power. Initially, this caught my attention. The violin instruments soon fade out to Hong Ki’s soft yet husky vocals. He definitely brings out the exasperation and desperation portrayed in the song. Overall, the song is very emotional and the instruments and vocals live up to the mood. However, one problem I experienced was that despite the catchy introduction, all in all the song was very reminiscent of their past title tracks.

Rewinding a bit, another song I wanted to mention was “I Love You (Love is…)” (track 1) which, in contrast to “Heaven”, is very cheerful and lively. The song is about giving one’s all for a lover. It has a very hopeful and optimistic view, perfect for those in new relationships. The other four tracks were also well produced and sung, with different members contributing their vocals in “When I Ask For Your Wellbeing” (track 3) and “Words I Have To Tell My Old Pal” (track 5).

In conclusion, I felt that despite the great vocals and instrumentals put into each song, in the end, everything started to sound alike. The songs seemed very cookie-cutter and did not give FT Island the chance to prove themselves as a true band. FT Island definitely have the skill and potential; I think a variety in songs would attract a bigger fan base.
