Weekly Music Chart 2009 - January week 1

We are starting our 5th year of the soompi weekly k-pop music chart.  There are some changes I made to fine-tune the chart – they’re mostly with regard to the allocation of chart scores among various sources.  The only new chart sources we are bringing in this year are the MTV weekly chart (5%), and the Cyworld chart will now be part of the various internet chart sources.  We hope the changes will further increase the timing and the accuracy of this chart.  For complete details, please refer to "Sources of the chart" at the end of this post.

 

 

1. (–) Baek Ji Young – 총 맞은 것처럼 (Like You Got Shot By A Gun) *** 2 WEEKS NO. 1 ***

Comment: Holding on to No. 1 from the last week of 2008 is Baek Ji Young’s "Like You Got Shot By A Gun".  This song is still No. 1 on most major chart sources in Korea.  Coming back from vocal cord surgery, Baek Ji Young traded her signature husky voice for a pure crystal tone and released her 7th album "Sensibility".  Since switching from Latin dance to ballads two albums ago, Baek Ji Young has enjoyed great success.  "Like You Got Shot Bu A Gun" is a sentimental ballad written by "Hitmen" Bang Shi Hyuk.

Comment: Looking for their first No. 1 song on our chart, SS501 are just one step shy.  With Kim Hyun Joong busy shooting the Korean adaptation of Hana Yori Dango and Park Jung Min starring in the musical Grease, the other 3 members of SS501 – Kim Kyu Jong, Heo Yong Saeng and Kim Hyung Jun – have formed the special unit Triple-S to carry on the music, and they’re now releasing the special six-track mini-album U R Man. Triple-S, which is also the name of SS501’s fan club, represents a new challenge for the three members as they push for a more mature sound and look, and even unveil their songwriting skills. Produced by the same team that created SS501 hits like 4 Chance, the album’s title track U R Man is just about a guaranteed hit with its catchy mid-tempo melody and urban house sound. Comment: Moving up 15 big spots and scoring their first-ever top 5 hit is Kara’s "Pretty Girl".  Many people predicted that Kara would be one of the girl groups to watch out for in 2009 as their popularity keeps rising.  They certainly got off to a good start.  Let’s see if this song will be able to challenge for the top spot soon.

Comment: R&B singer K.Will (27) returns after 1 year and 4 months of inactivity. He has received the support of MC Mong in his title track ‘Love 119′ on his new digital single.  ‘Love 119′ is a project with MC Mong where the theme is ‘love’ and where they attempt to transform their music. This time K.Will attempts a medium-tempo track which is tailor-made for winter. K.Will’s company stated that “This song will mark the discovery of a different side to K.Will”.  MC Mong’s good friend Jang Keun E has been the featured rapper on most of K.Will’s live performances of this song.

Comment: The group of winter returns for yet another hit this season from their recently released best hit album "Unlimited".  "Goodbye To Romance" is one of the two new song featured on this album, and is our biggest mover this week.  Over the years, MC The Max have sung many rock ballad hits in Winter.  "Goodbye To Romance" is more up-tempo but still fits their mode.
