Weekly Music Chart 2009 - February week 3

1. (–) SNSD – Gee *** 3 WEEKS NO. 1 ***
Score: 864
Genre: Pop / Dance

GeeMusic + Lyrics: E-Tribe

Album:
SNSD mini-album Vol. 1 Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: SNSD’s "Gee" remains No. 1 for the third week in a row.  The score is lower this week due to the song graduating from Inky Gayo Take 7.  However, the competition is also getting weaker.  It is likely that this song will get a 4th week at the top unless the challengers really pick themselves up next week.

2. (–) Seung Ri (Big Bang) – Strong Baby
Score: 769
Genre: R&B / Dance

BigBang2Music + Lyrics: G-Dragon, Bae Jin Ryul
Album: Big Bang Vol. 2 Track 5 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Featured in Big Bang’s 2nd album, "Remember", this track shows off a solo transformation by the group’s youngest, Seung-ri. It’s a modern, pop-style dance track with an intense rhythm and melody. Seung-ri casts off his cute-boy image and presents a sexier, manlier side in the music video. 3. (+1) Lyn – 사랑…다 거짓말 (Love…It’s All Lies)

Comment: This is the title track of Lyn’s 5th album entitled “Let Go, Let In, It’s A New Day”. It is a sad and sentimental ballad. The lyrics, which the singer wrote personally, are about the pain of being unable to forget one’s lover after a breakup. The music video shows the enchanting side of Lyn, who acts out as its main character. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

Score: 733

Comment: Underrated R&B singer Bobby Kim is back with a special album, and its title track "Love…This Person" rises up to No. 4 this week.  Throughout the years, Bobby Kim is known for his soulful voice which adds to the pureness of his R&B ballads.  He has also done a lot of drama OST songs.  His albums are always selling well and stay on the chart for a long time.  Looks like this song will also stay in the top 20 for many weeks to come.

Comment: From the OST of the highly popular KBS Drama "Boys Over Flowers", SS501’s "Because My Head Is Bad" moves up to the top 5 this week, becoming the first drama OST song to hit the top 5 on our chart.  Originally the theme song for Yoon Ji Hoo (SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong), this song quickly became popular as the ending song for the drama. This is the second song performed by Heo Young Sang, Kim Kyu Jong and Kim Hyun Joon from SS501 after "U R Man". (credits to ~S2~)

Score: 460
Genre: Pop

Comment: Not to be outdone by SS501’s "Because My Head Is Bad", the title song from the drama "Boys Over Flowers" also made it to the top 10 this week.  This is the first time two songs from the same album appear in the top 10 at the same time in our chart.  Kim Joon, a member of F4 in the drama, is also a member of T-Max, which helps to bring more attention to this underrated band.

9. (+12) Jewelry S – 데이트 (Date)
Score: 443
Genre: Pop / Dance

JewelrySMusic: Lee Min Soo / Lyrics: Gorilla
Album: Jewelry S mini-album "Sweet Song" Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: In 2008, two new members, Kim Eun Jung and Ha Joo Yun, joined Jewelry and had much success with their fifth album, One More Time. This year, the two new members have now made a sub group, Jewelry S, to show a sweet and cute side of them. The title track "Date" made it to the top 10 in just two weeks.   "Date" was composed by the hitmakers who have also produced Everyone Sh! and L.O.V.E. It is a cute song about the nervousness girls feel when talking about their crushes and the confession that goes along with it. The other two Jewelry members have also helped out: Park Jung Ah took part in the music video while Seo In Young helped with the dance choreography.

10. (+3) After School – Ah
Score: 350
Genre: Pop / Dance

AfterSchool1stMusic + Lyrics: Brave Brothers

Album:
After School 1st mini-album "New Schoolgirl" Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: The 1st rookie group in 2009 to hit the top 10, After School is a promising new girl group with members Park Ga Hee, Yoo So Young, Lee Joo Yeon, Kim Jung Ah and Pekha. Not to be confused with school girls despite the name, After School has a mature and sexy image and all but one members are in their 20s.  The five girls list the Pussycat Dolls as their role models, and specialize in melodious hip hop and electronic cuts complemented with dance performances. After an intensive preparation period of over two years, the gorgeous girl group steps on the K-pop scene with a mini-album "New School Girl".  The title track "Ah" is written by fast-rising Brave Brothers, who has written many hit songs in the past few months.

11. (+5) May Doni (feat. Kwon and Jung Jin Woon of 2AM) – 몰라 ing (Mola ing)
Score: 342
Genre: R&B Ballad

7TeenMusic + Lyrics: Yoon Il Sang
Album: May Doni Single Album "7Teen" Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Already enjoying fame even before she officially debuted, 17 year-old May Doni made her first appearance last year when she was featured on PDIS’ project album.  Her strong vocal made a quick impression on fans.  Now she is finally debuting as a solo singer.  Yoon Il Sang (IS of PDIS) is in charge of her single album.  The title song "Mola ing" has moved up 5 spots to No. 11 this week.  This mid-tempo R&B tune can go either way – faster to become a dance track (the IS mixed version on the album) or slower to become a ballad track, which is the version on our chart.

Score: 337
Genre: Pop / Dance

PrettyGirlMusic + Lyrics: Han Jae Ho, Kim Seung Soo
Album: Kara 2nd mini-album "Pretty Girl" Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the title track of Kara’s same-titled mini-album. It is a pop dance song representing Kara’s cheerful and cute image. The lyrics describe the "rules" of looking beautiful. The refreshing melody and the concise chorus with the repetitive phrase "pretty girl" make this song very addictive. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

K-Will’s soft and touching vocals harmonize with the string melody, while MC Mong’s rap adds to the song’s outstanding quality. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

Comment: This is the title track of Untouchable’s first studio album “Quiet Storm”. It features an addictive hip-hop-based rhythm and a sorrowful melody created through a delicate harmony between acoustic and synth sounds. 15. (–) T – 떠나지마 (Don’t Leave)
Score: 318
Genre: R&B Ballad

DontLeaveMusic + Lyrics: Yoon Myung Sun
Album: T digital single "Don’t Leave" Track 1
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: After giving birth to her baby with Drunken Tiger, T (Tasha) is coming back with an R&B ballad "Don’t Leave", which should attract mainstream listeners. Yoon Myung Sun, who is known for composing Eru’s Black Glasses, composed this song and Bang Shi Hyuk, who has composed Baek Ji Young’s "Like Being Hit By a Bullet", took charge of arranging it. This song is about remembering the hurtful memories about love.

16. (-8) Baek Ji Young – 입술을 주고 (Give Your Lips)
Score: 316
Genre: Pop / Dance

BaekJiYoung7Music + Lyrics: Bang Shi Hyuk
Album: Baek Ji Young Vol. 7 Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: Live Performance
Comment: When Baek Ji Young first debuted, she was famous for her Latin dance-style songs.  Since switching to ballads with great success, we haven’t heard her performing a dance song for a long time.  Her latest hit "Give Your Lips" reminds us of her roots as a dance artiste.  This song is also written by "Hitmen" Bang Shi Hyuk, who wrote her No. 1 ballad "Like You Got Shot By A Gun".

17. (+8) Kinetic Flow (feat. AG) – 현실에 2프로 부족한 연인들에게 (To Lovers Who Are Missing 2% of Reality)
Score: 310
Genre: Hip Hop

DeliciousDays
Album: Kinetic Flow single album "Delicious Days" Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Hip-hop duo Kinetic Flow score their first top-20 hit with a very long and interesting song titled "To Lovers Who Are Missing 2% of Reality".  This song scores most of its points on airplays.  Kinetic Flow’s songs are mainstream enough to appeal to pop fans and it finally shows this time.

18. (+2) Jessica H.O – 인생은 즐거워 (Life Is Good)
Score: 307
Genre: Hip Hop/R&B

TheRebirth
Album: Jessica H.O digital single "The Rebirth" Track 1
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Jessica H.O previously had a top-20 hit with Uptown, but "Life Is Good" is her first solo top-20 song.  When Jessica first debuted, she was doing primarily pop dance songs.  Ever since she joined Uptown, she has been switching more and more to hip-hop, and is gaining more acceptance.  This song is no exception.  It is an up-tempo hip-hop / R&B song in which we can hear both her vocal and her rapping.

19. (+4) Tae Goon – Call Me
Score: 281
Genre: Pop / Dance

CallMeMusic + Lyrics: Sound Of Strike
Album: Tae Goon mini-album "Call Me" Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Another 2009 newcomer makes it to the top 20 this week.  Tae Goon’s "Call Me" is a dance number with melodious electronic sound-inspired beats that promise to keep listeners spellbound. Tae Goon has been performing actively in gayo shows and his dance steps are very impressive.  Not many male dance artistes have debuted in recent years, so Tae Goon is one to look out for.

20. (+18) KCM – 멀리 있기 (To Be Far Away) *** BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***
Score: 280
Genre: R&B Ballad

KCMmini
Album: KCM mini-album "Espresso" Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: KCM is back with a mini-album "Espresso" and the title song "To Be Far Away" is our biggest mover this week.  "To Be Far Away" features acoustic instrumentation and a 50-person orchestra which perfectly complement the song’s melancholic lyrics. The storyline is about a lover enduring the pain after a breakup and wishing happiness for the ex. Korea’s top songwriter Cho Young Soo, who has written most of KCM’s hit songs in the past, is again in charge of this song.

BONUS TRACK:
Su Bin – 사랑은 봄처럼 (Love Like Spring)
Genre: Pop Ballad
Music: Jung Pil Seung / Lyrics: Lee Ji Eun
Album: Su Bin digital single "Love Is Green" track 1
Watch:MV
Comment: If you have listened to k-pop music long enough, you may have remembered Su Bin was the lead vocalist of Turtles on their first album.  Her husky voice is in sharp contrast to Gumpi’s high-pitched voice, who took over as Turtles’ vocalist from the 2nd album onward.  Now after 6 years, Su Bin is coming back as a solo artiste.  Su Bin’s voice is more suitable for ballads and that is what she sings in this song.  The song incorporates a 24-person string orchestra.  MJ is the featured rapper.  This warm love song is perfect for those who want to love.  The ample string sounds were borrowed from the famous classical music composition "Canon" by Johann Pachelbel.
