Weekly Music Chart 2009 - March week 1

1. (–) SNSD – Gee *** 5 WEEKS NO. 1 ***
Score: 824
Genre: Pop / Dance

GeeMusic + Lyrics: E-Tribe

Album:
SNSD mini-album Vol. 1 Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: SNSD’s "Gee" continues to occupy the top spot for the 5th straight week.  It’s the longest No. 1 tenure for a song in more than a year.  Since the beginning of 2008 when we adjusted our chart scoring method, no song has spent more than 4 weeks at No. 1, so this is a very good accomplishment.  What’s even more amazing for SNSD is their long running No. 1 record at KBS Music Bank – it stands at 8 weeks now.  SNSD are still performing this song and it has a chance next week to join an elite company of very few songs to spend 6 weeks at No. 1 on this chart.  Stay tuned.

2. (+19) Kara – Honey
Score: 769
Genre: Pop / Dance

HoneyMusic: Han Jae Ho, Kim Seung Soo / Lyrics: Han Jae Ho, Song Soo Yoon
Album: Kara 2nd mini-album Special Edition Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Coming out of nowhere and moving up to the No. 2 spot is Kara’s "Honey" from their 2nd mini-album special edition.  The song was our hot-shot debut last week at No. 21, and surprisingly leapfrogged many strong challengers all the way to the second spot this week, thereby duplicating the success of their previous song "Pretty Girl".  Kara are looking for their first No. 1 song on this chart.  They already had their first No. 1 on M!Countdown this week and are also the favorite to win the Inky Gayo Mutizen award.  Next week we’ll have an interesting battle for our top spot between two hottest girl groups in Korea now.

3. (-1) Bobby Kim – 사랑..그 놈 (Love…This Person)
Score: 722
Genre: R&B Ballad

BobbyKimSpecialMusic + Lyrics: Park Sun Zoo
Album: Bobby Kim Special Album "Love Chapter 1" Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Underrated R&B singer Bobby Kim has the No. 3 song this week, from the title track of his special album "Love…This Person".  Throughout the years, Bobby Kim is known for his soulful voice which adds to the pureness of his R&B ballads.  He has also done a lot of drama OST songs.  His albums are always selling well and stay on the chart for a long time.

4. (+2) Hwa Yobi – 반쪽 (Half)
Score: 716
Genre: mid-tempo R&B

ThisIsLoveMusic: Jun Hae Sung / Lyrics: Hwa Yobi
Album: Hwa Yobi mini-album "This Is Love" Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Last year, Hwa Yobi boosted her popularity by appearing on the TV Show "We Got Married".  She now returns as a singer and has released a new mini-album.  The title track "Half" moves up 2 spots to No. 4 this week.  It’s Hwa Yobi’s first top-5 song.  This song represents a change of style as its melody is more up-tempo than other Hwa Yobi hits from the past.  "Half" is about a woman whose life gets complicated after she falls in love with a man who is already taken. It was composed by Jun Hae Sung, who also wrote Yoon Do Hyun’s "I Must Have Loved" and Lee Seung Chul’s "Long Day", while Hwa Yobi personally penned the lyrics. There is also an acoustic version of the song which shows another side to it.

This is the second song performed by Heo Young Sang, Kim Kyu Jong and Kim Hyun Joon from SS501 after "U R Man". (credits to ~S2~)

Comment: Featured in Big Bang’s 2nd album, "Remember", this track shows off a solo transformation by the group’s youngest, Seung-ri. It’s a modern, pop-style dance track with an intense rhythm and melody. Seung-ri casts off his cute-boy image and presents a sexier, manlier side in the music video. This digital single was composed by Min Myung Ki, who also wrote hit songs such as Gavy NJ’s Remember and SG Wannabe’s Lalala. Unlike typical ballads, this song samples Bach’s Music Note for Anna Magdalene and incorporates Miss $ member Tae Hye Young’s rap. Famous director Yang Jin Ho, who also directed Lee Juck’s It’s a Relief video, is in charge of the music video.  This is an excellent song which we highly recommend.

The title track "Date" is at No. 12 this week.   "Date" was composed by the hitmakers who have also produced Everyone Sh! and L.O.V.E. It is a cute song about the nervousness girls feel when talking about their crushes and the confession that goes along with it. The other two Jewelry members have also helped out: Park Jung Ah took part in the music video while Seo In Young helped with the dance choreography.

BONUS TRACK:
Creative Music Stage – Brother
Genre: Rock

Album: Creative Music Stage digital single "Brother"
Watch: MV Listen to: Full Song (Thanks to Mardi09 for uploading the song and the MV)
Comment: This is a new 4-member indie rock band consisting of Azzy (vocal), Jung Seung Jae (drum), Bae Young Bong (Guitar), and Yoon Sae Won (Base).  "Brother" is their debut single.  It is a mid-tempo rock ballad dedicated for all families.  Living in such a busy world, it is very easy to forget about one’s families. In fact, families may even become enemies as time passes by. Finally there is a song that can relate to this problem. One might not like this song at first listen, but it would not be surprising if it would change one’s life forever.  You can hear Azzy’s emotional vocals in the song.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:
S#arp – 내 입술 따뜻한 커피처럼 (My Lips Is Like Warm Coffee)
Genre: Pop Ballad

Album: S#arp Special Album "Flat b" Track 2
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: S#arp was a 4 member co-ed group with Jang Suk Hyun (Leader, rap), Lee Ji Hye (Lead vocal), Seo Ji Young (Rap, vocal) and Chris Kim (Rap). They debuted in 1998 and reached their prime in 2001 with 3 No. 1 songs "Sweety", "100-Day Prayer", and our featured track "My Lips Is Like Warm Coffee".  After their fifth album "Style", the group broke up due to the fight between the two female members.  The latest we have seen of them is on the show "Let’s be friends", where Lee Ji Hye and Seo Ji Young met to make up their differences. Seo Ji Young and Lee Ji Hye both have done solo activities, Seo Ji Young getting attention for being both an actress and a solo singer, while Lee Ji Hye is currently collaborating with ex-S#arp leader Jang Suk Hyun in the fun song "Love 100%". Chris has also released a solo album "Christopher".  S#arp was known as a dance group, but they are best remembered for this ballad "My Lips Is Like Warm Coffee".  Because the song’s melody really gives listener a warmth feeling, you can still hear this song quite often every winter.
