2PM is on a long list with other recent boybands and girl groups that have been popping up out of nowhere every month or so. With that said, the group (and their counterpart, 2AM) has the backing of the powerful JYP Entertainment. This alone allows them to stand out more than a few others, but it’s certainly their humorous nature, as well as talent in vocals and dancing, that really gives them the boost. Their first single, The Hottest Time of the Day, is filled with intoxicating songs that prove that JYP has once again struck again.
The promotional song, 10점 만점에 10점, is a humorous song that not only shows a quirkier edge to them, but also shows off their talents in dancing when it comes to live performances. At first, the song might come off as a little awkward, but it’s quite infectious and its content isn’t meant to be taken seriously. The use of funky synths really emphasizes that and gives a fun and exciting feel to the song, while the powerful beats still give the song prominence. The vocal section is mixed between those who are rapping and those singing. This certainly keeps the interest of the song and shows off the talent of the members.
The other songs on the single are interesting as well. I personally prefer the title track, but you can also see the talent in Only You. This mid-tempo R&B song gives off a comforting feel, while also providing little bits of excitement here and there. Much like the promotional track, this song shows a mixture of rapping and singing, but switches a bit and shows off a bit more singing this time around. The next song, Angel, is certainly stronger. It has the edge the first track had, but in a slightly more serious tone. It’s catchy and highly intoxicating with its mix of hip-hop and dance.
2PM is certainly off to a good start. This single was refreshing in the sense that it had a less serious side to it and focused more on having fun. However, fans could also listen for themselves and discover the talents that each of the individual members had. I wouldn’t call this single amazing, but it’s certainly a solid release and is great for people wanting to get into another group or craving for a little more fun.
