Weekly Music Chart 2009 - June week 1

Note: I’ll be out of town for a week.  Next week’s music chart posting will be delayed a few days.  Thanks for your understanding and patience.

1. (+7) Super Junior – 너라고 (It’s You) *** 1 WEEK NO. 1 ***
Score: 881
Genre: Pop / Dance

SuperJunior3CMusic + Lyrics: E-Tribe
Album: Super Junior Vol. 3 Version C Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Super Junior just take 2 weeks for their new song "It’s You" to reach the top spot.  They are the first artistes in 2009 to have two No. 1 songs.  "It’s You" is coming from the newly released C version of their 3rd album, which has 4 new songs, including this title track.  It’s written by E-Tribe, who also wrote SNSD’s "Gee" earlier this year.  Unlike "Sorry Sorry", "It’s You" is mellow and more pop-oriented.

2. (-1) 2PM – Again & Again
Score: 842
Genre: Pop / Dance

2PMmini2009Music + Lyrics: Park Jin Young

Comment: This is the representative track for 2PM’s single album "2:00PM Time For Change". It features a dreamy melody and rhythm that go well with 2PM’s intense dance moves. The song is about a man returning to a lover who has left because he has lingering feelings. The music video shows 2PM performing and impressive transformations by each member. 3. (-1) SG Wannabe (feat. Yurisangja Baek Seung Hwa) – 사랑해 (I Love You)

Album: SG Wannabe Vol. 6 Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: This is the representative track for SG
Wannabe’s 6th album "Gift From SG WANNABE". Composer Cho Young-soo,

new member of SeeYa. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

4. (–) See Ya, Davichi, and Ji-Yeon (T-Ara) – 여성시대 (Women’s Generation)
Score: 819
Genre: Pop / Dance

Woman'sGeneration
Album: See Ya, Davichi & T-ara digital single "Women’s Generation" Track 1
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Members from three of MNet Entertainment’s girl groups joined forces for a project single.  "Women’s Generation" is a pop/dance song with a slight trot style.  It remains at No. 4 this week.  New group T-Ara’s member Ji-Yeon joined See Ya and Davichi in this collaboration, which reminds us of last year’s Color Pink.  This song is competing with 2NE1’s "Fire" in most internet music charts in Korea, with a slight edge that is also reflected on this chart.

5. (–) 2NE1 – Fire
Score: 781
Genre: Hip-hop / R&B / Dance

FireMusic + Lyrics: Teddy
Album: 2NE1 digital single "Fire" Track 1
Watch: MV (Space Version) MV (Street Version) Live Performance
Comment: Taking K-pop by storm is 2NE1 (To Anyone), the first girl group from YG Entertainment.  Despite limited TV exposure, their debut single "Fire" only needed 2 weeks to make it into the top 5.  2NE1 are known as the female version of Big Bang.  Last month, they had a collaboration with Big Bang "Lollipop" and used the song to introduce the new group.  Many girl groups are work-in-progress when they debut, but this group is definitely a finished product.  Thanks to their prolonged training, they are already performing like veterans. 2NE1 will definitely make a major impact on k-pop for years to come.

6. (-3) Younha – 원투쓰리 (1,2,3)

Genre: Piano Rock

Younha3AMusic: F. Hult, S. Kosug / Lyrics: NANA

Comment: This is the representative track for Younha’s third album “Part.A Peace Love & Ice Cream". Cheerful and lively, the song is about the mind of a girl in love and features attractive brass and percussion sounds. Younha shows off a more mature and lovely side in the music video. Comment: This is the representative track for K.Will’s first mini album. The song starts with a simple piano melody and combines magnificent orchestra tunes and drum beats. K.Will’s more mature and moving voice sings about a heartbreaking separation. Yuri of Girls’ Generation stars in the music video as a mature woman who sheds tears. Comment: Veteran Lee Seung Chul returned to the top 10 this week with "MY Nails Came Off". The song comes from his 10th album titled Mutopia. The word Mutopia mixes the two words “music” and “utopia” together to show fans the journey music has taken him throughout his life. This song is composed by Jun Hae Sung, who also wrote the song “Long Day.” The song has a rock style and Lee Seung Chul’s trademark sincere vocals.

Genre: Jazz Ballad

ParkJiYoon7
Album: Park Ji Yoon Vol. 7 Track 3 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Park Ji Yoon’s comeback hit "In A Faded Memory" drops to No. 9 this week.  No longer a bubbly teenage girl, Park Ji Yoon made a 180-degree change to her music style, singing acoustic and jazz ballads now.  Back in the days she never had a chance to showcase her vocal talent.  Many doubted whether she could make it through this transformation.  After a few live performances and also solid album sales, she has silenced all her critics.

Score: 510
Genre: Pop / Dance

IU1Music: Han Sang Won / Lyrics: Han Sang Won, Choi Kap Won

Comment: This is the representative song for IU’s first album "Growing Up". An up-tempo song with a cheerful melody, it blends retro 80s sounds with a contemporary sensibility. The song is laced with teen emotions and the fun lyrics tell a girl’s cute love story. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

11. (+5) Chae Yeon – 흔들려 (Shake)
Score: 477

Shake
Album: Chae Yeon mini-album "Shake" Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment: Sexy diva Chae Yeon returns with a mini-album "Shake", and the title song of the same name moves up 5 spots to No. 11 this week.  DJ Koo of Clon also offered 2 re-mixed versions of this song.  While Chae Yeon was on hiatus from music between her last album and now, many female singles with similar styles to hers have emerged.  Now Chae Yeon is out to re-capture her fans once again.  The timing of this release is good as we are getting into summer and dance hits always do well in this season.

This cheerful and exciting song about the sweet feeling of love was written by Yonggamhan-hyeongjae, who also wrote many hits for Big Bang, Se7en and Son Dam-bi. Score: 312
Genre: Pop Ballad

KimTaeWoosingle
Album: Kim Tae Woo digital single "Memory and Remembrance" Track 1
Watch: MV
Comment: Kim Tae Woo makes a comeback after 3 years as he has completed his military service. This single is like a G.O.D reunion song as it features G.O.D members Son Ho Yong, Danny Ahn and Park Joon Hyung, and is our highest debut this week.  This was originally supposed to be a surprise present for the ten-year friendship among the G.O.D members.  The song was composed by Lee Hyung Seung and penned by Kim Tae Woo himself. Comment: This is the representative track for Jo Sung-mo’s 7th album "Second Half". The ballad features Jo Sung-mo’s uniquely sweet vocals and is about a man’s sad reminiscence of a former lover. Kim Ha-neul stars in the music video, which comes 11 years after "To Heaven", helping to make it a hot topic. Comment: One of the very few singer-songwriters in Korea, Kim Dong Ryul maintains a low profile, yet his songs are always appreciated by fans.  He has very strong album sales despite not performing on music shows.  This song by Kim Dong Ryul was originally featured in his first solo album. He sang this as a ballad at his 2008 concert and has now released the studio version as the title song of this live concert album, featuring more effects which creates the image of traveling with the seas.  Check out our "Yesterday Once More" segment this week – we feature a song from Kim Dong Ryul.

Title song "If You Pretend" is a collaboration track with Davichi member Kang Min Kyung.  It is our biggest mover this week. The song is a dance number which has some reggae sounds, along with a summery cute feel to it. Kang not only took part in the song but the choreography as well.

BONUS TRACK:
Nia – My Everything
Genre: Modern Rock

Album: Nia 1st single album "My Everything" Track 1
Listen to: Full Song
Comment: This week we introduce a new all-female rock band Nia.  Their single ‘My Everything’ has been used by numerous composers. Some might say, "what kind of band doesn’t write their own songs?" But NIA’s choice was different. They had already made many songs and performed them. They monitored the feedback they were given off the internet and selected the song for the public themselves. YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:
Kim Dong Ryul – 취중진담 (Saying The Truth When Drunk)
Genre: Pop Ballad

Album: Exhibition Vol. 2 Track 8 (1996) / Kim Dong Ryul: The 2nd Concert 招待(초대) Track 12 (2005)
Watch: Live Performance
Comment: Kim Dong Ryul is a multi-talented artiste. He composes, arranges, writes lyrics, produces, and performs his music. Formerly he was in a duo (Exhibition) with member Seo Dong-Wook and grew popular with their hit song "In Dreams" in 1993. After four years, the two decided to continue schooling and disbanded. In 1998 he became solo with his first album "The Shadow of Forgetfulness", after a project album "Carnival". "Saying The Truth When Drunk" is from Exhibition’s second album, but Kim Dong Ryul also sang a solo version of it at his second concert.  Last year, Fly To The Sky remade this song with an R&B version and it became a big hit, thereby rekindling interest in the original version.
