BIOGRAPHY:

For this week’s featured Artist, we have SHINee! 2008’s young rookies who has swept every newcomer award with their spot-on performances, polished choreography and out of this world fashion. This promising group from SM Entertainment, comprised of 5 young members averaging from ages 17-19, is surely one of the fastest rising artists in the K-pop music industry.

Formed in 2008, SHINee members: Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin were kept secret until days before May 25 when SM Entertainment announced the entrance of a new group. Even their parents didn’t know until a month before hitting the stage. Targeting the noona (older sister) audience with their debut song from their first mini-album “Noona Neomu Yeppo (Replay)” it instantly gained them many fans. The song was first performed on M! Countdown’s stage but was never aired, so their official TV debut performance was on SBS Inkigayo. Dominating 2008 with their debut song and then followed-up by the songs “Love Like Oxygen” from their first full length album “Shinee World” (also the official fan club name for SHINee) and “Amigo” from their first repackaged album, they started grabbing all the newcomer awards of 2008. Their live performances along with their hard choreography were greatly praised and have always impressed fans and non-fans. Their growing popularity led them to be on the top ten list of artists with the most number of fans. By landing many advertisements, featurings, TV shows and commercials, SHINee set the difference by living up to their genre, contemporary music and style proving that 2008 was SHINee’s year!

After a very successful debut, SHINee finally had their goodbye stage on January 24, 2009 performing “Amigo” for the last time on MBC Music Core. After 4 months of preparation, SHINee was set to make their comeback on May 2009. Their second mini-album entitled “Romeo” was released on May 25, exactly one year since their debut, with the title track “Juliette,” a remake of Corbin Bleu’s song “Deal With It.” The lyric of “Juliette” is composed by SHINee’s very own lead vocal, Jonghyun. Unfortunately, SHINee’s leader Onew was reported to have suffered from a teeth injury after falling from the stairs on his way home, thus postponing their comeback stage for a week. He recovered quickly but the next week, TV channels had to cancel their regular programmes to pay respect to South Korea’s former president’s death, again postponing their comeback stage further and pushing it to early June 2009. Finally on June 5, SHINee performed “Juliette” on KBS Music Bank and was right away a contender for number 1. More surprisingly, SHINee reigned supreme on the very day of their comeback by winning the number 1 song, shocking all the members who did not expect it at all. To date, “Juliette” has won 4 number 1 song awards and is still promoting.

SHINee is styled by pop polymath designer Ha Sang Beg, former top model and figurehead of fun in Korean fashion. SHINee member Minho has modeled for him prior to and after debut. Minho has also modeled for high fashion designer André Kim. The difficulty level of their dance moves are choreographed by Rino Nakasone, a member of an American dance crew named “Beat Freakz” and also one of Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku girls. This 5 young boys are also well-traveled, doing activities in China, Thailand, Taiwan, New Zealand and the US. They will soon be going to Japan to promote.

In 2009, SHINee’s youngest member, Taemin, has ventured into acting by landing a role of a perfect son on MBC’s primetime sitcom “Taehee Hyegyo Jihyun” (Mon-Fri, 7:40 PM KTR). Onew is also featured in SNSD’s second mini-album “Genie” with the song “One Year Later”, a duet with Jessica Jung. Jonghyun is a regular guest every Saturday on Super Junior’s Kiss The Radio. They are continuing to grow and improve to give us better SHINee years!
