It’s the return of writer, pianist, producer, dj, and now café owner, Yoon
Gun, a contributing artist to the Korean mid-tempo R&B ballad
phenomenon. After four successful Korean albums and two Japanese
singles, he brings us his first mini album titled 라떼처럼 (Like A Latte).
Yoon Gun is a former member of the soul R&B duo Brown Eyes, who
debuted in 2001 and gave magnificent influence to musical artists today
with a new dimension to the ballad tune. Brown Eyes’ surprising
comeback reunion in 2008 was not the only extraordinary work Yoon Gun
had in store for us. Embedded within 라떼처럼 (Like A Latte) is a mix of
the classic Brown Eyes vibe and the groovy piano sounds of Yoon Gun,
all through a personal flavor of his latest inspiration: coffee.
Yoon Gun revolves this new album around love and coffee, thus producing the
album title and track “라떼처럼” (Like A Latte). With the new ingredient,
the track still manages to follow suit to the sounds of Yoon Gun’s past
penmanship. The familiar, yet refreshing, beats are delivered with his
piano specialty and the soft acoustic accompaniment of long-time peer,
Ham Choon Ho. The sweet lyrics give a cheerful sentiment to this song
as he describes the woman’s love and fragrance to that of a latte.
Another fun and recommended track is “사랑하니까 다 괜찮아” (With Love Everything Is
Alright) (track 3). The piece really brings out the Brown Eyes half of
Yoon Gun as the subtle repetition of the chorus is addicting and almost
hides the electronic complements in the background. What I love most
about Yoon Gun’s albums (and Brown Eyes’, must I say) is the
instrumental tracks provided at the end of each; don’t forget to listen
in on the instrumental arrangements of “라떼처럼” (Like A Latte).
After much anticipation, Yoon Gun has done it again in his own fashion.
Although it’s only a mini album in trade for his new cafe restaurant
and book this year, “라떼처럼” (Like A Latte) doesn’t fail to deliver
everything Yoon Gun. He doesn’t stray away from his true skills and
genre, but he isn’t afraid to be inspired either, especially with a mix
of fragrance like a latte. This one’s not to be missed whether you’re a
Yoon Gun or Brown Eyes fan or not.
5/5 – Even if you’re not a fan of this artist/group this album is a must buy.
4/5 – If you’re a fan of this artist/group, you must buy this album.
3/5 – If you’re a fan of this artist/group, you might want to add this one to your collection.
2/5 – I don’t think a fan would even buy this.
1/5 – You might as well just flush your money down the toilet.
