Weekly K-pop Music Chart 2010 - January week 1
chart of 2010. As we always do at the beginning of each year, we are
making some changes on the weight of our sources to better reflect this
chart ranking. For this year, we decide to combine all the cable
sources (MNet, KMTV, Cable airplays) into a single source and accounts
for 15%. We won’t reference to M!Countdown anymore. Instead, we’ll use
MNet’s weekly internet chart as their base. Also, all the three major
TV Stations (SBS, KBS, MBC) will have a 10% weight on their rankings.
Other parts of our sources are unchanged.
Because
our last chart of 2009 was two weeks ago, and with all these changes
taking place effective this week you will see a lot of new songs and
big movements on the chart. Next week should go back to normal.

Comment:
As the calendar turns from December 31, 2009 to January 1, 2010, last
year’s standout rookies are no longer new singers. Picking up where
they left off in a strong 2009, T-Ara scores their first ever No. 1
chart hit with “Bo Beep Bo Beep”. It is also the group’s 3rd top 10 hit
after “Lie” and “TTL”, coming from their first full length album which
many top composers wrote for them. “Bo Beep Bo Beep” is a hot dance
track with additive melody. T-Ara just won the bronze award of best
newcomers on our soompi gayo awards show. Looks like they are ready to
challenge other top k-pop girl groups this year.
2. (+4) After School – 너 때문에 (Because Of You)
Score: 821
Genre: Pop / Dance
Music + Lyrics: Brave Brothers
Album: After School 2nd single Track 1 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment:
Just two points behind T-Ara is another outstanding rookie female group
of last year. After School already won a mutizen award on Inky Gayo
with this song “Because Of You”. It moves up 4 spots to No. 2 this
week, surpassing their debut song “Diva” which went to No. 6. Unlike
their previous hits, this song is slower in tempo and has a Shibuya kei
style with electronic pop sounds. It is a new try for both the group
and hot songwriter Brave Brothers. Through this song, listeners can see
their top notch live performance. This song already topped many
internet charts in Korea.
3. (+35) Younha – 오늘 헤어졌어요 (We Broke Up Today) *** CO-BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***

Comment:
Our first big mover is from Younha. She returns with part B of her
third album, titled, Growing Season. Younha has been known for her
unique piano rock tracks in the past. She never promoted a ballad song
until now. The song “We Broke Up Today” is a sad ballad number which
expresses one’s truthfulness on the hardships of breakup. It was penned
by fellow singer Hwayobi.

Title song of 2PM’s first studio album. A heartbeat becomes the
backbone of the rhythm with a drum sound taking over as the main
accompaniment, creating a unique new sound. The lyrics are about a man
in despair over a breakup. 2PM’s incredible performance is highlighted
in the music video. (credits to Arirang TV – Pops In Seoul)

Having produced some of the most successful k-pop artists this decade
(2PM, Wonder Girls, 2AM, Rain, G.O.D, etc.), Park Jin Young (JYP) is
taking his turn as a singer and returns to the top 10 this week with
the title song “No Love No More” from his latest mini-album “Sad
Freedom”. Many of the younger fans may not recall JYP as a singer and
dancer, but he has many hit songs in the past. He showcases his singing
and dancing steps on this funky song. After watching his performances,
fans will understand why he has so many bright pupils.
7. (+33) Brian (feat. Supreme Team) – 내 여자 (My Girl)
Score: 487
Genre: R&B / Dance
Album: Brian Vol. 2 Track 2 Purchase this album
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment:
During any week, a 33-spot jump is good enough for the week’s biggest
mover, but this particular week seems to be the exception. It is still no small
accomplishment for Fly To The Sky’s Brian, who released his 2nd solo
album recently and made a big jump to the top 10 this week with “My
Girl”. Unlike most of his songs from Fly To The Sky and also from his
first solo album, “My Girl” is dance track featuring hip-hop group
Supreme Team who gained attention last year with “Super Magic”. It is a
refreshing new style for Brian.
8. (+35) Eun Ji Won (feat. Mr. Tyfoon) – 사이렌 (Siren) *** CO-BIGGEST MOVER OF THE WEEK ***

Our highest debut this week is from ballad artist Zi-A’s lastest hit
“Have A Drink”. This new single is a gift to her fans, returning the
love that they had sent her while she was having a hard time after her
car accident. “Have A Drink” is about a woman who is suffering after a

Comment:
His “Love Rain” was named our 2009 Song Of The Year. Kim Tae Woo is
back “Love Snow” at No. 11. This is the re-arranged version of “Love
Rain” to fit with the Christmas atmosphere. We will be able to hear a
new melody to the song as well as a rap portion. Different from the
pop/rock feel that we heard from “Love Rain”, “Love Snow” has more of
an orchestration and electric piano sound to it. There are also carol
tunes in between the chorus and bridge sections of the song. About 50
of producer Kim Hyun Suk’s trainees gathered together for the harmony
and two new artistes, Droplet and Slime were featured in the song.
12. (New) Ga In & Jo Kwon – 우리 사랑하게 됐어요 (We Fell In Love)
Score: 380

Album: Ga In & Jo Kwon digital single “We Fell In Love” Track 1
Watch: MV
Comment:
The latest hit coming from the reality TV Show “We Got Married”
features Brown Eyed Girl’s Ga In and 2AM’s Jo Kwon. It’s composed by
Brown Eyed Girl’s leader Je-A. It is a nice duet song that has an (8
beat) new wave sound that was popular during the 1980s. Composer Lee
Min Soo (Love; Abracadabra) and lyricist Kim In Na have contributed in
creating the song as well. Ga In and Jo Kwon also contributed to the
lyrics by telling honest stories of their make-believe marriage life.
Through this couple/duet song, we will be able to listen to their
wonderful harmony and outstanding vocal skills.
13. (New) Jewelry – Love Story
Score: 345

Album: Jewelry Vol. 6 Repackaged Version Track 2
Watch: MV Live Performance
Comment:
Jewelry’s latest hit “Love Story” will be the last hit song that long
time members Park Jung Ah and Seo In Young performed with the group.
They already announced they are leaving to continue their already
successful solo careers. Kim Eun Jung and Ha Joo Yeon will stay in the
group with new members replacing Park and Seo. “Love Story” is about a
love story between a man and a woman in which they go through different
stages in their relationship. The lyrics express the different emotions
very well and the melody fits perfectly with the winter atmosphere.
Unlike Jewelry’s dance songs, “Love Story” showcases the members’
strong vocal and rap skills. Jewelry has not promoted a ballad track
since “Tonight” from their 2nd album. The MV is a compilation of
footage focusing on Park Jung Ah and Seo In Young.
