The 12th JeonJu International Film Festival: Fun, Smart, and Communication

The press conference for the 12th JeonJu International Film Festival (JIFF) took place at Seoul’s Sejong Hotel on March 29th. The spokesperson for the event introduced, “The slogan for this year’s event is freedom, independence, and communication; and the keywords are smart and fun.”    

The film festival is slated to take place between April 28th and May 6th. JIFF represents new challenges and experiments, and this year the event is focusing on Korean films. Film critic Maeng Soo Jin was recruited as the JIFF’s general manager in charge of programs throughout the festival. The closing film for the film festival will be chosen during the Korean Feature Film Competition.

For the first time since the category was established, a Korean director’s film was invited to screen at the International Competition. The selected entry was director Kim Kyung Man’s An Escalator in World Order. Additionally, the behind-the-scenes documentary of Kang Dong Won’s M (2007), directed by Lee Myug Se, is expected to screen for the first time ever. The Korean Movie Showcase is also plans to show seven diverse Korean films, ranging from digitally restored Lim Kwon Taek’s Mandala (1981) to Kim Sun’s Self-Contradiction (2008).

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s Nader and Simin, a Separation has been chosen as the opening film for the 12th JeonJu International Film Festival. The film is shown from a child’s perspective of how a family is torn apart when average breadwinner Nader’s life unexpectedly unravels as he is charged with murder.    

Jung Il Woo and Kim So Eun, ambassadors for the 12th JeonJu International Film Festival, were also present at the press conference. Jung Il Woo said, “It’s a real honor to be chosen as ambassador for the 12th JeonJu International Film Festival as it is one of the most important film festivals recognized worldwide. JeonJu symbolizes the taste and charm of Korea. I’ll do my best to fulfill all my duties as the PR Ambassador for this honorable event. I’ve always respected and liked director Lee Myung Se, and I plan to attend his special exhibition.” Kim So Eun added that she too will work hard to promote the festival. Kim So Eun stated, “I can’t wait for the screenings that take place throughout the night and when they pass out surprise treats after the first movie!”
