Hallyu Wave to Make a Splash at the 64th Cannes Film Festival

Three rookie directors will join veteran directors Hong Sang Soo, Kim Ki Duk, and Na Hong Jin at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. On April 19^th, Cannes announced its selection of Lee Tae Ho’s In Front of the House and Moon Myung Go’s The Immortal Man for the Short Film Competition and Son Tae Gyum’s Fly by Night for the Cinefoundation on its official website.

In Front of the House and The Immortal Man qualified for screening at the short film section of the 50^th Semaine de la Critique (also known as Critics Week in English), the oldest competitive section at the Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, the Cinefoundation, the category Fly by Night qualified for, is a foundation created to inspire and support film students.

Son Tae Gyum’s Fly by Night is the only Korean film to have entered the Cannes’s main competition this year. Fly by Night portrays homosexuals in a relatively serene light and gained recognition at the 52^nd Joong Ang University Film School’s Graduation Film Festival. Night Fishing, directed by brothers Park Chang Wook and Park Chan Kyong, won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the 61^st Berlin International Film Festival last year. Korean independent films are gaining a lot of worldwide recognition, and it can probably be another source of the Hallyu Wave.
