Lee Byung Hun’s Bloody Thriller “I Saw the Devil” Wins Top Prize at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival

Lee Byung Hun, Choi Min Sik, director Kim Ji Woon, and screenwriter Park Hoon Jung’s bloody thriller I Saw the Devil (2010) has been well received in Europe. Director Kim Ji Woon is well known for his unique genres as well as sophisticated cinematographies, while screenwriter Park Hoon Jung demonstrated his strong writing abilities with last year’s hit movie Bad Deal (2010).

On April 19th, I Saw the Devil won the Golden Crow Award at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) in Brussels, Belgium. The BIFFF is one of three Fantastic Film Festivals – the other two are Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia in Spain and the Oporto International Film Festival in Portugal. The Fantastic Film Festivals were created as venues for fantasy, horror, thriller, and science fiction films. Eleven films were nominated for the Golden Crow Award, and I Saw the Devil won the grand prize.

I Saw the Devil is about secret agent Soo Hyun (Lee Byung Hun) as he goes on a pursuit of revenge after his fiancé is murdered by a dangerous serial killer (Choi Min Sik). The movie was the talk of the town after it was released for its brutal and gory scenes. Despite its overly grotesque scenes, the star power of actors Lee Byung Hun and Choi Min Sik along with prominent director Kim Ji Woon brought in over 1.8 million viewers to theaters in Korea alone. I Saw the Devil has also won several awards at the 18th Festival du Film Fantastique à Gerardmer.
