Jang Geun Suk Promotes Traditional Korean Dish on Japanese TV

Jang Geun Suk appeared on Japanese TV show “SMAP X SMAP” on July 18th and expressed his affection for Kimchi Jjigae, a traditional Korean stew-like dish. He said it’s a “great opportunity to introduce Korean food” as the show was aired in primetime at 10PM on one of Japan’s largest network channels, Fuji TV.

The star actor/singer tried out two types of Kimchi Jjigae on the show. One was just a regular type made with Kimchi and other ingredients, while the other was a fusion style Kimchi Jjigae mixed with Vongole pasta. “The spicy and deep taste of the (regular) Kimchi Jjigae reminds me of my mom’s dish. The older the Kimchi, the better it tastes usually. I also really like the fusion Kimchi Jjigae. Its new recipe is very refreshing,” Jang Geun Suk said after tasting both dishes.

During the show, Jang Geun Suk also talked about the way he spends his down time. “Whenever I get an off day, I just watch DVDs or listen to music at home. I also enjoy dancing by myself at home or on the streets outside. These days I’m really into ‘shuffle dance,’” he said, as he took out speakers to showcase his dancing skills with SMAP’s leader Nakai Masahiro.

The segment Jang Geun Seuk appeared in is called “BISTRO SMAP.” It’s widely regarded as one of the most popular variety shows in Japan, hosted by SMAP, the country’s most influential celebrity group. “BISTRO MAP” invites popular celebrities to its show and serves dishes cooked by the hosts. The show’s guests are usually top-notch celebrities—some of the previous guests include Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Lady Gaga, Lee Byung Hun, and Lee Young Ae—which many view as a reflection of Jang Geun Suk’s growing popularity in Japan.
