"Invincible Youth's" Steady Rise of Popularity in Japan

I think it is safe to say that most of you reading this know about the popular KBS variety show “Invincible Youth.” For those unaware of the show, here is a quick synopsis.

The show featured seven girls taken from popular groups, collectively known as the G7. The original seven were Narsha of Brown Eyed Girls, Han Sunhwa of Secret, HyunA of 4minute, Hyomin of T-Ara, Sunny and Yuri of SNSD, and Goo Hara of Kara. Sunny, Yuri, and Hyuna then left the show to be replaced by After School’s Jooyeon, f(x)’s Victoria, and Kim Sori. The girls would experience what it was like to live and work in rural settings, and despite the simple idea, it is a show that is nothing short of entertaining to watch.

Well, the show is now steadily winning hearts in Japan. Asahi Newspaper talked about the show where you could see Hallyu idols without makeup and with a wholesome image you would not see on stage, that it was real. Since the release last April, the DVD of the show has been selling very well.

There is an episode of the show where SNSD’s Sunny visited Biei, Hokkaido. Sunny, as ever, would win everyone over with her charm but also the episode seems to have made an impact with tourism. The tourism representative of Biei said, “It has become a famous tourist location for Koreans. I didn’t know that two days of filming would have this much of an impact.

Japan is very much in love with the Hallyu wave, with groups such as SNSD, Kara, BEAST, and Big Bang making a great impression. The love of idols is something that has most likely been a major factor of the sales of the “Invincible Youth” DVD. Hopefully we will see such a rise of popularity in other countries.
