Sunny Hill makes an explosive comeback this summer after spending two years preparing for their latest EP, “Midnight Circus”. The talented, mixed group returns with two additional members, Kota and Misung, and experiments with different music genres and fashion to complete its radical transformation.

Right from the introduction track, “Girl with a Accordion”, the album’s theme “circus gone wrong” comes to play. The accordion, ringmaster’s introduction, as well as the crowd’s cheering definitely sets the mood for what the album has to offer – Sunny Hill’s own show. The intro track is shortly followed by a medium-tempo ballad number, “Puppet”, which beautifully meshes haunting vocals with aggressive rapping. The steady drumming, guitar accompaniment, and synth sounds completes this song like icing on cake.

The next song is title track, “Midnight Circus”, composed and penned by the Lee Min Su and Kim In Ah combo, who is responsible for hit songs such as Brown Eyed Girls’ “Abracadabra,” and IU’s “Nagging” to name a few. Right from the start, the use of various musical instruments such as the organ, drums, accordion, and trumpet helps set the mood of watching an exciting circus act. This energetic song incorporates quirky, yet strong vocals with bold rap, making this song fun to sing along to. The eccentric English lyrics further makes this song a must listen for all K-Pop fans.

Track four is “Let’s Talk About” which features top vocalist, Zia. This upbeat number takes place in an airplane that is about to take off, as shown through the random “announcements” heard throughout the song. On first listen, the song may seem to be all over the place due to its crazy beats and random rap and vocals, but that in itself is what makes this song unique. Too much of the song however, might give you a headache.

The last song is the preview of their upcoming single, “Prayer”. Unlike the rest of the songs off “Midnight Circus”, “Prayer” is an emotional ballad number in which the girls are able to showcase their vocal talents.

In conclusion, this album was a pleasant surprise. I was never much of a Sunny Hill fan prior to “Midnight Circus”, but this EP has got me craving for more. Their choice of music style has changed for the better, and I believe that if they keep this up, they will have a huge fan base in no time.
