Infinity Challenge Gets Another Warning From the KCC

One of Korea’s top variety shows, MBC’s “Infinity Challenge”, has once again received a warning from the Korea Broadcasting and Communications Review Committee (KCC).

On Oct. 26, the producer of the show Kim Tae Ho was summoned to the KCC committee meeting, in which it was discussed that the “Infinity Challenge Speed Special” has exposed too violent images, which can cause social harm.

One of the representatives of the MBC network station gave a short statement, “The KCC is concerned because of the images, which show car explosions, can cause social harm. Especially young male adolescents are in danger of getting negatively influenced by these kinds of exposures. The producer will shortly state a few comments to clarify more details.”

The program’s producer Kim Tae Ho commented the following about the mentioned episode, “We wanted to use good special effects to make it look like a quality movie and we have put a lot of thought and effort in this. We did not think that these images were a potential threat and that it would be criticized, since these images are shown quite lot on television.” He continued, “The variety programs in the Korean television industry are quite similar to each other, (if there is not much diversity) our national broadcast industry will collapse. We wanted to show something new and exciting, we wanted to be different. A producer enjoys the exploring of new things.”

This warning has fired up much debate. This has been the third time of this year that the KCC has handed out a warning to “Infinity Challenge”. Last month, they were concerned because of the implied violent language abuse and now they are concerned about the dangers of apparently too violent images.

What will happen further, will be decided on November 3 on a complete committee meeting.
