[MSD: Memorable Scene of the Day] A Thousand Days’ Promise: Episode 16

Hey Soompiers! I am pleased to introduce a new segment, titled “Memorable Scene of the Day (abbreviated MSD),” for all you drama fanatics like myself. According to our “About Us” page, soompi.com is “the world’s largest and longest-running English online media providing complete coverage of Korean pop culture.” I don’t know about you, but recently, I felt like our site was too music heavy. Don’t take me wrong… I love kpop. That’s one of the reasons I work at soompi.com. But the drama fanatic deep inside me screamed, “We need more drama stuff on soompi!!!” For those of you who remember, I used to have a segment called “Soompi Drama of the Week,” but I couldn’t wait an entire week to write about some of the awesome dramas we have. So without further ado…

**SPOILER ALERT**

Tuesday night’s episode was a tearjerker as Seo Yeon’s cousin, Jae Min (Lee Sang Woo) and brother Moon Kwon (Park Yoo Hwan) finally dropped the bomb about Seo Yeon’s (Soo Ae) condition to the rest of the family. As expected, Aunt is hysterical, while bratty cousin Myung Hee shows that despite her nasty behaviors towards Seo Hyun, she cares for her deeply.

Jae Min and Moon Kwon come home with dark faces, and they linger in front of Aunt and Uncle to spill the news. The Aunt, who can already tell that what’s about to be said is pretty bad, cautiously asks, “What are you guys going to say? My heart’s beating so fast, I feel like dying. What is it? Tell me.” After warning them to prepare themselves, Jae Min simply replies, “Seo Yeon has Alzheimer’s.”

Initially, Aunt goes into denial, saying, “Stop joking. She’s only thirty. It doesn’t make sense.” Then she slowly starts accepting the truth as she looks at the tears in Moon Kwon’s eyes. Jae Min explains, “You pointed out that Seo Yeon was acting strangely. It was because of her illness. She was diagnosed before the wedding, and that’s why Ji Hyung (Kim Rae Won) rushed the wedding. The only thing that can be done is to slow the progression of the disease, but she had to stop her meds because of her pregnancy.”

Shocked from the unexpected news, Aunt passes out; and when she wakes up, she sobs her heart out, crying, “My poor baby. What has she done to deserve this.”Myung Hee hears her mother’s cries and bursts into the room. The first words out of her mouth are “Did Seo Yeon die?” which earns her a few slaps on the back from her mother. Aunt starts lashing out, “Are you happy now? You bitch.”

Meanwhile, Hyanggi’s mother walks into Soo Jung, Ji Hyung’s mother, and Seo Yeon’s dinner and makes blistering remarks about “having a daughter-in-law with dementia.”

“A Thousand Days’ Promise” is a melodrama love story of a woman diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Lee Seo Yeon (Soo Ae), and a man, Park Ji Hyung (Kim Rae Won), who loves her unconditionally.

SBS’s “A Thousand Day’s Promise” has secured it’s number one rating with 16.9% (AGB Nielsen) for Tuesday night’s episode, a 1.3% increase from it’s previous episode. KBS’s “Brain” and MBC’s “Light and Shadow” recorded 11.8% and 10.5% respectively.

For those of you who have been following the drama, what are your thoughts? Did you like the episode? What dramas do you want us to cover? Consider this your open thread to rant and rave about the memorable scene of the day!
