Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - February Week 1

T-Ara repeats once again as No. 1 with “Lovey Dovey“. It is their third straight week on top of our chart and it is still going strong with 969 points. “Lovey Dovey” also won the Triple Crown on SBS Inkigayo last week. That means “Lovey Dovey” will be off the Take 7 for next week, and a more significant drop in points is expected. Will this song hold on for the fourth week on top?  We’ll find out next week.

MBLAQ moves up two spots at No. 2 with “This Is War“. This ties their highest chart ranking song “Mona Lisa” which also went to No. 2 last year. MBLAQ will not be satisfied with being second this time and they are looking for their first ever No. 1 song on our chart. “This Is War” has already been No. 1 on M!Countdown for two straight weeks and it has the best shot to finally break the female chart dominance on our chart next week.

Moving up six spots to score their first top three hit is mixed group Sunny Hill’s “The Grasshopper Song.  This song is written by Lee Min Soo and Kim Ina, the same combo that created so many of the Brown Eyed Girls’ uptempo songs. This song did have some traces of early BEG dance hits. The unique melody and catchy lyrics made this song easy to sing along to.

Only one new song in our top 10 this week, as there isn’t too many new releases on the first week after Lunar New Year. At No. 10, female soloist J-Cera scores her first solo top 10 hit “Love City Confession District Happiness Town“. J-Cera previously got into the top 10 with December on the CS Numbers collaboration “Cry With The Heart“. This mid-tempo song, as its creative title implies, is with a happy theme.

THIS WEEK IN 2007:

In this segment, we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi Music Chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.

ERU is the son of legendary trot singer Tae Jin Ah. He attended the famous Berkley School Of Music in the USA before coming back to Korea to debut as a ballad singer. ERU debuted in 2006 without much fanfare. That makes it even more amazing that he became an overnight sensation with his second album in 2007 “Level II.”  The title song “Black Glasses” became a big hit and won many awards at year end. All of a sudden, ERU became a household name. The follow up hit “White Snow” was released in early 2007 and hit No. 1 on many charts including ours on this week five years ago. The piano arrangement, the melody and the lyrics makes “White Snow” a perfect winter ballad. With these two mega hits, “Level II” was one of the best ballad albums in the last decade.

Let’s revisit the MV of “White Snow” here.
