Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - February Week 4
FT Island takes a more comfortable win this week as their “Severely” tops our chart for the second consecutive week over Seven’s “When I Can’t Sing”. Last week, “Severely” beat “When I Can’t Sing” by the tinest margin of a single point (939 Vs 938). This week “Severely” continues to gain points while “When I Can’t Sing” drops. “When I Can’t Sing” was a popular choice at most TV Networks as the song repeated as the Mutizen winner in SBS Inky Gayo and also topped M!Countdown. “Severely” has the edge in Airplays, Internet rankings, GAON, and Billboard Korea.
There are 3 new songs and one re-entry (Dal Shabet’s “Hit U”) into the top 10 this week. Moving up from No. 14 to No. 3 is Davichi’s “Will Think Of You”. This song is the first single coming from veteran songwriter Jun Hae Sung’s Love Call project. The song starts off with organ accompaniment which brings out a vintage feel. However, the song continues with refined beats and lyrics. “Will Think Of You” has an impressive move into the top three this week. Will this song become the first digital single to ever hit No. 1 on our chart? We’ll find out in the coming weeks.
A new star is born at No. 7 as Ailee’s debut song “Heaven” moves up 26 big spots. K-Pop is so group oriented these days that a singer has to be pretty good to debut as a solo artist. Ailee is more than pretty good and she has diva written all over her. Not since G.na‘s debut two years ago had a new female soloist getting so much attention. Fans already got a glimpse of Ailee’s talent as she was an internet sensation. Her clips covering many American R&B singers are everywhere on Youtube, plus she was featured as a rapper on her mentor Wheesung’s song “Here They Come” last year. “Heaven” is an R&B ballad that is very difficult to sing but Ailee handles it flawlessly. Some called her the female Wheesung. With her early debut, Ailee is definitely a front runner for the best new artist award this year. Meanwhile, she is currently starring in the KBS Drama “Dream High 2” along with many idol singers.
Also making a big move at No. 8 is Jay Park’s “Know Your Name”, up from No. 25 last week. This song is coming from his first full-length album titled, “New Breed”. “Know Your Name” is a pop euro dance number with hip-hop elements. Since going solo, Jay Park has two hit songs last year including the No. 2 song “Abandoned”. Lets see if “Know Your Name” will become his first chart topping hit.

THIS WEEK IN 2009:
In this segment, we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi Music Chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.
February Week 4 belongs to Girls’ Generation. For three straight years from 2008 to 2010, Girls’ Generation occupied the top spot on our chart in this particular week. They did it in 2008 with “Kissing You”, in 2009 with “Gee”, and in 2010 with “Oh!”. Within these three No. 1 songs, “Gee” is probably the most popular among fans. “Gee” spent a total of five weeks on top of our chart, including the whole February of 2009 and the first week of March. “Gee” is also considered Girls’ Generation’s forst major break throguh hit both in Korea and internationally.
