Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - June Week 2

TaeTiSeo has relinquished their hold onto the top spot as “Twinkle” dropped to No. 5 this week.

For the first time in months, our chart result doesn’t quite agree with the major TV networks in Korea.  The favorite to take over the top spot was supposed to be Infinite’s “The Chaser” since it swept all the music shows last week.  Instead, it was two female soloists in a close battle for No. 1.  G.NA’s “2HOT” edged Baek Ji Young’s “Good Boy” by five points to become our new No. 1 song.  “2HOT” wasn’t even in the top 10 last week when it debuted at No. 12.  Just named winner of this week’s Music Bank K-Chart, this song scores consistently high on every sources of our chart.  Likewise for “Good Boy” and it finished a close second.  The last time two female soloists went 1-2 on the chart we had to go back to 15 months ago on March Week 1 2011 when IU’s “Story I Didn’t Know” was No. 1 and G.na’s “Black And White” was No. 2.  IU is at No. 4 this week with “Every End Of The Day”.

As for “The Chaser”, instead of moving up one spot to the top, it unexpected dropped one spot down to No. 3.  We take a closer look and find out the main reason: despite winning in all major networks, this song had a poor score in the two major independent charts in Korea: Billboard Korea and GAON, and also not ranked too high on various internet charts.  Those proves too much to overcome.

There is only one more new entry to the top 10 this week other than “2HOT”.  Hip-hop duo Leessang just released their 8th album “Unplugged”.  They chose to have a three title songs this time and all three songs are in our top 20 this week: “My Love” at No. 9, “Someday” at No. 14, and “Hard To Be Humble” at No. 17.  All three songs are of different style.  “My Love” is of acoustic style hip-hop, “Someday” with the help of Yoon Do Hyun is rock oriented, while “Hard To Be Humble” is the laid back style hip-hop that we are accustomed with Leessang.  Don’t be surprised if Leessang has more than one song in the top 10 next week.

THIS WEEK IN 2006:

In this segment, we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi Music Chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.

We covered Baek Ji Young last week with her early Latin dance hit “Dash.” She is at No. 2 this week with her latest dance hit “Good Boy.” Six years ago this week, she had a major turning point on her career. Up to that point, Baek Ji Young was known as a dance artist.  After a long layoff due to her unfortunate sex tape scandal and being banned from network TV, she came back with her fifth album switching to promote a ballad “I Won’t Love” as her title song.  Hitmakers Park Geun Tae and Cha Eun Tak tailor made this song to fit Baek Ji Young’s husky voice.  It became a hugely successful hit and her career is reborn with a new focus on ballad.  Today, Baek Ji Young is known as a ballad queen especially on drama OSTs.  She also keeps singing dance hits to give listeners more choices.

Despite spending only one week on top of our chart in June Week 2, 2006, “I Won’t Love” was one of the top hit songs that year, and Baek Ji Young was named top female soloist on our 2006 Soompi Gayo Awards.  Let’s revisit the MV of this song.
