Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - June Week 4
We have predicted a “Wonder-Bang” battle for this week but it did not materialize. Wonder Girls’ “Like This” won by a landslide this week to become our new No. 1 song. This song has swept every charts in Korea and ended up scoring 963 points on our chart this week, that is 165 points higher than the second place song Teen Top’s “To You”, which won a tiebreaker over last week’s No. 1 song G.na’s “2HOT”. The two songs scored the same point and our first tiebreaker is airplay which “To You” is a lot higher. The second place ranking is highest for Teen Top so far in their young career.
As for Big Bang’s “Monster”, it only rises three spots to No. 5. This is mainly due to Big Bang not coming out to promote this song. It was not listed on SBS Inkigayo and MNet’s M!Countdown, at least not yet last week. Had this song been ranked on every chart, it would have been very close to the top.
There are two new songs in the top 10 this week. At No. 6, it is a surprise entry into the top 10. Hip-hop duo Hyungdon & Daejun moves up 11 spots with their hilarious hit “The Gloomy Song.” Fans outside of Korea may not be familiar with this group but they are not exactly new artist. The duo consists of renowned rapper Defconn and comedian Jung Hyung Don. They teamed up to release a mini-album “Gangster Rap Volume 1.” Their style fits underground more but nonetheless has made a successful crossover to the pop chart. “Gloomy Song” is a hilarious hip-hop number about a broken-up couple.
Debuting at No. 9 this week is the long-awaited new song by f(x) titled “Electric Shock.” This song is coming from the group’s second mini-album of the same title. f(x) had a breakout year last year with hits like “Pinocchio (Danger)” and “Hot Summer.” Their latest hit “Electric Shock” is an energetic electronic dance number. It compares falling in love with an electric shock. This song will definitely be in the top three next week and perhaps even challenging “Like This” for the top spot.
A change on our chart source this week as we have replaced the MBC Gayo Chart with Chart M from MBC Plus’ gayo program “Show Champion.” We normally make changes only at the beginning of each year but we feel the Chart M is a more accurate reflection overall.

YESTERDAY ONCE MORE:
Team – 별 (Farewell)
Genre: R&B Ballad
Comment: Brown Eyes is considered a pioneer of the modern day Korean pop/R&B ballad. Before Brown Eyes debuted in 2001, member Yoon Gun was in a four-member group Team. Their music style is very similar to Brown Eyes. Perhaps it laid the foundation to Brown Eyes’ music and certainly influences many artists today. Team was a short lived group as they only released one album Teamplay in 1999 and then disbanded. Besides Yoon Gun, another Team member MC Chang Jin is still active today as a member of Honey Family. “Farewell” is the title song of Team’s only album. Let’s review this MV to see the similarities between Team and Brown Eyes.
