Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - July Week 1

No change in the top two spots as we start the second half of 2012.  f(x) continues to occupy the top spot for the second straight week with “Electric Shock.” This song has swept all music show rankings and various music charts in Korea, and has opened up a bigger gap after its narrow one point win over Wonder Girls’ “Like This” last week.  Despite both songs dropping in points this week, f(x) is wins by a score of 949 to 914.  Both songs are still well ahead of the competitions, so they may still be 1-2 next week.

There are four new songs in the top 10 this week.  Ever changing girl group (in terms of membership) After School jumps a big 19-spot all the way to No. 3 with their maxi single “Flashback” to make it an all female top three this week.  Many fans were sad to see long time leader Kahi graduate from the group, but their popularity remains strong. “Flashback” adds to After School’s collection of top three hits on our chart.  They previously had “Shampoo”, “Because Of You”, and “Bang” in addition to their sub-unit Orange Caramel also generating many hit songs.

Up 12 spots to No. 7 is Busker Busker’s new song “If You Really Love Me.”  The Superstar K3 runner-up had just wrapped up a very successful debut on their first album. Their previous hit “Cherry Blossom Ending” reached No. 1 and was named the No. 5 song on our half year top 10 countdown.  Just like “Cherry Blossom Ending”, “If You Really Love Me” is a relaxing mid-tempo indie rock song.

Our highest debut this week is at No. 8 and it is a surprisingly high entry. Well respected rapper Verbal Jint recently released his new album “10 Years Of Misreading Part 1” to sum up his decade in the music industry. A preview single “Good Morning” was on our chart for the past three weeks. The real title song “You Deserve Better (feat. Phantom’s Sanchez)” debuts at No. 8 this week.  It is Verbal Jint’s first top 10 hit on our chart.  This song has received very good reviews from Korean listeners, and it is one of the best songs I’ve heard so far this year.  Sanchez’s perfect R&B voice plus Verbal Jint’s smooth rap makes it very refreshing to listen to.  With all the idol singers occupying most of the top spots on the chart, it is good to see that songs like this one and Busker Busker one spot above was not ignored by listeners.

The last new song in the top 10 is at No. 9.  8Eight’s Lee Hyun is back in the top 10 with “My Heart Ache,” coming from the OST of popular SBS Drama “A Gentleman’s Dignity,” which stars Jang Dong Gun and Kim Haneul.  This is the first time in one and a half years that a drama OST song made it into our top 10. The last drama OST song to hit our top 10 was Baek Ji Young’s “That Woman” from “Secret Garden” last January. Both dramas are coming from the same screenwriter and producer. Besides “My Heart Ache,” this drama has another two songs on our chart this week: Yangpa’s “Love…What To Do” at No. 22, and Kim Tae Woo’s “High High” at No. 26.

BONUS TRACK:

Mr. Boomba – Love Cafe (with Litta)

Genre: Hip-hop

Album: Mr. Boomba digital single “Love Cafe”

Comment: Mr. Boomba finally makes a comeback after two years with their first single, “Love Cafe.” The song is a hip-hop number about reminiscing about past love and welcoming the inevitable breakup. The lyrics are expressed through rap by Mr. Boomba’s very own rapper, Tox and Cosmopolitan’s female rapper Litta. This song is the first single pre-released in midst of their second album release.
