Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 – October Week 1
It was another week of close calls among the top three songs. Female groups swept the top three last week, but it was broken up by G-Dragon this week as his “Crayon” moved up six spots to capture No. 1 in just the song’s second week on the chart. This song was also No. 1 on M!Countdown last week. Male soloist has not been much of a factor on our chart in recent years. In 2012, we already have Psy and now G-Dragon topping our chart.
Orange Caramel’s “Lipstick” is No. 2 again this week, just 13.5 points behind G-Dragon’s “Crayon.” The trio was looking for their first ever No. 1 song but had to settle for second best again. Last week, they lost a close battle to Secret’s “Poison”. This week “Lipstick” moved past “Poison,” which fell to No. 3, only to have “Crayon” leapfrogging both songs.
There were two new songs in the top 10 this week. Moving up twelve spots to No. 6 is the latest hit by hip-hop duo Mighty Mouth. This time they team up with Lyn this time for their song “At Times Like This.” In the past, Mighty Mouth usually features dance artists as most of their hits were up-tempo songs. This time they made a 180 degree change as Lyn is known for her ballads. Besides their rapping, Mighty Mouth members also take part in the singing this song.
At No. 7, Brown Eyed Soul’s NaUl is releasing this first solo original album “Principle Of My Soul” after all these years. The title song “Memory Of The Wind” moves up six spots into the top 10 this week. This is a very touching ballad that matches the concept of his album “healing of soul.” Not only this song but many songs from NaUl’s album is ranked in the top 10 in all internet charts in Korea. All four Brown Eyed Soul members have now released their own solo albums. I think NaUl’s is the best, going way back to the days he was in Brown Eyes. “Principle Of My Soul” is the best album I’ve heard since Kim Yoon Ah’s “Going Home” in 2010.

Sung Shi Kyung – 처음처럼 (Like The First Time)

Comment: Over the years, Sung Shi Kyung has earned the nickname “ballad prince” as he has many great ballad hits, including “On The Street,” one of the very few songs that spent six weeks on top of our chart. “Like The First Time” was Sung’s debut song in 2001. At that time, he was an unknown newbie, but immediately captured listeners with his warm and soft voice that matches so well to his songs. This song stayed many weeks in the top 10 and laid the foundation for his great career that is still going strong now.
