Tyra Banks Wishes Everyone A Happy New Year In A Traditional Hanbok

Top model and TV personality Tyra Banks recently showed her love for Korea by sending fans a New Year’s greeting in traditional Korean garb.

On January 14, Tyra banks tweeted “Getting my Korean New Year celebration on w/ the #ANTM crew” with a link to her official youtube account that features a clip of her wishing fans “Happy Korean New Year!” 

In the video, Tyra Banks explains that she has dressed up in a Hanbok to celebrate the New Year with her cameraman Ken Mok’s wife’s sister’s Korean family. And not only that, Tyra Banks says that she will also be “learning how to bow to the elders and they hopefully will wish me plentiful happiness for 2013.”

On choosing to wear a Hanbok, she said, “I arrived today and I noticed that the lovely women here had on these beautiful Korean dresses – and I felt very jealous. And I asked to be in on the fun. And I had a fitting. And Helli, Ken Mok’s wife’s mother – she put me in this beautiful Hanbok. I feel lovely in. Particularly because I don’t have to fold in my stomach. It’s all concealed.”

When asked to wish fans a happy new year in Korean, Tyra said quickly, “Seh heh bok mahn hee bahd euh she yo” to the delight of fans. She added, “I’ve been told that I should say it softer…I also have been told that to the elders, I should not look them in the eyes” and demonstrated how she was taught to cover her eyes respectfully in the bow. 

Tyra also showed viewers how she learned to give a proper bow to the prompting of her cameraman. She instructed, “The bow is very important. Supposed to put my hands on either side of my hips. Arms out. One foot in front of the other a little. And down, don’t make eye contact with the elders, get to the bottom and ‘Seh heh bok mahn ee bahd euh seh yo.'”
