Super Junior’s Heechul Disses SM Entertainment's Casting Process

Heechul of Super Junior, who is now active as a member of the group after completing his military service, recently expressed his dissatisfaction with his agency’s way of casting.

On October 10’s broadcast of JTBC’s “War of Words,” the panel members discussed the current trend of remaking Japanese dramas. This led them sharing a few words about SBS’s drama “To The Beautiful You” that was produced and funded by SM Entertainment, but failed to meet the viewers’ high expectations.

Heechul expressed his disappointment by saying, “In the company, we have an acting team and a singing team, but the actors are promoted too much like singers. Even I tend to complain about it.”

“Then again for us, this is something to be thankful for. SM thinks that their artists are so pretty and handsome that there is no need to cast people from outside. We are considered the best by our agency. SM only casts its own artists for the music videos,” he explained.

“But it will not work if it is exclusively us in every video!” Heechul concluded with frustration.

One of the panel members Park Ji Yoon responded with, “I would propose it is due to the sudden change in the singers’ style at the high-point of their popularity that causes the dramas to fail,” explaining the reason why “To The Beautiful You” did not succeed.
