IU Confesses She Became a Singer Thanks to Gummy

Singer IU revealed the story of how she became a singer thanks to one of Gummy’s songs.

On October 16, IU appeared on MBC FM4U’s “Park Kyung Lim’s 2 O’Clock Date” as a guest. She picked Gummy’s “We Should’ve Been Friends” as the song that made her what she is today.

IU told her story behind the song. “I sang this song at a school festival when I was in middle school.” She also said, “I thought to myself, ‘I should become a singer,’ as I sang the song. It felt great because I wasn’t nervous at all about singing in front of so many people.”

She added, “After the performance, sunbaes got angry at me. They didn’t like the fact that an underclassman performed on such a big stage.”

IU concluded by saying, “Actually, it was because of Gummy unnie that I was able to become a singer. When I went to audition at the label I’m signed under right now, Gummy unnie was there. I was surprised because I prepared ‘We Should’ve Been Friends’ as my audition song. She listened to me sing and said they should pick me.”

IU displayed her gratitude toward Gummy and said, “Gummy unnie still helps me a lot.”
