Actor Jung Suk Won Turns Down Mediation from CEMA

Jung Suk Won, actor and husband to singer Baek Ji Young, has rejected Corea Entertainment Management Association (CEMA) Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee’s offer for mediation.

Rather than taking CEMA’s mediation offer to negotiate with his agency Forestar Entertainment with regards to his request for contract termination, Jung Suk Won has decided to choose legal action instead. Commercial arbitration is a process of mediation of legal matters arising from commercial activity. Jung Suk Won’s side has stated, “The legal proceedings Jung Suk Won has initiated be will made known shortly.”

Jung Suk Won had appeared in front of the CEMA committee on October 24 to argue his stance. Earlier in September, Jung Suk Won had submitted documents that claimed Forestar Entertainment were negligent in managing his career and failing to follow the terms of the contract.

There is concern that by rejecting CEMA’s mediation offer, Jung Suk Won’s entertainment career may be left in limbo. In previous contract disputes between agencies and their entertainers, CEMA had prohibited member agency actors from appearing in any productions until their conflicts had been resolved. Since court proceedings usually take a long time, Jung Suk Won may be unable to carry out entertainment activities, leaving bystanders curious to see if the parties will be able to find middle ground.

Jung Suk Won signed a management contract with Forestar Entertainment beginning June 20, 2010 and ending May 19, 2017. The duration of his contract differs from the standard contract according to the Korean Fair Trade Commission. He still has three years and eight months left on his current contract with Forestar Entertainment.

Jung Suk Won was in the process of filming “NLL – Battle of Yeonpyeong,” but it is unclear if he will be able to star in the movie given his current contract issues. The movie is of special interest as it is a crowd funded production.
