Hello Soompiers, and welcome to the Soompi Awards 2013! *applause*

For our ninth year, we are pleased to announce our collaboration with the awesome mobile application LINE. With LINE, you can exchange text messages, photos, video and audio media, and make phone calls, all for free! We are also pleased to announce that the Soompi Awards show will air on MYX TV. MYX TV is the leading Asian American cable channel in the US, and they have produced and aired the Soompi Awards video segment for the past two years. Soompi Awards 2013 will air on MYX TV sometime in January! Please check back for specific air dates.
This year’s nominees vary from perennial fan favorites such as Girls’ Generation, to old-time rockers such as Cho Yong Pil, to international superstars such as PSY, to youthful rookies such as Lim Kim, to indie-turned-mainstream rockers Busker Busker, to timeless sexy divas such as Lee Hyori. Whatever your biases in the world of K-Pop in 2013, we’ve got you covered. All you have to do is vote for your favorites — all the time! The breakdown is as follows:
The voting period will last from December 24 to January 13 (KST). You can vote as often as you want on the web, and once a day on LINE. However, Best Music Video and Song of the Year are only available for voting on LINE, and votes from LINE count for 50% of the total vote. So download the app now and get started – find Soompi under “Official Accounts” and add us, and you’ll receive instructions on how to vote!
The nominees for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Artist of the Year were decided using quantitative and qualitative factors, including Soompi Music Chart rankings, international fan base, and staff discussion. Please refer to the voting page for the full list of nominees.

For the majority of categories, the decision will be split with 60% coming from fan votes, and 40% coming from the Soompi Music Chart rankings. For the latter, the winning artists/songs of each category will receive a full 600 points. All other artists/songs will receive a prorated score based on the percentage point finished below the winner.
The other 40% comes from our weekly music chart scores, adjusted for competition, seasonal, and position factors.
Competition: The total scores of all 50 songs added up for each week, compared to average score (over 52 weeks) in 2013. The weeks with above average scores mean that the songs in that week are facing stronger competition, and thus are “rewarded” with an adjustment factor to which it is above the average score. Likewise, songs appearing in a week that is under average are “penalized” with an adjustment factor to which it is under the average score.
Seasonal: Albums and songs released towards the end of the year are weighted higher than the beginning of the year because more popular singers and important albums are usually released in the second half of the year. We are using an increment of 0.01 each week, starting from January Week 1 with a factor of 0.75. July Week 1 is the mid-year point and the factor is 1. December Week 4 is our last week and the factor is 1.25.
Position factor: To reward songs that rank higher in the chart, we assign a weight for each song each week. Even though our weekly chart has 50 songs, the focus is still on the top 20 songs. As a result, songs from No. 1 to No. 20 will receive a considerably higher factor than songs from No. 21 to No. 50 each week, as follows:
- 1 – 1.000
- 2 – 0.965
- 3 – 0.930
- 4 – 0.895
- 5 – 0.860
- 6 – 0.825
- 7 – 0.790
- 8 – 0.755
- 9 – 0.720
- 10 – 0.685
And so forth.
The raw music chart score will be transferred to the music chart weight score with the highest of each category receiving 400 points. The scoring mechanism is the same as fan voting. Adding up fan voting (60%) and music chart (40%) will be the total score. The highest total score on each category will be declared winners. The maximum possible point scored on each category is 1000.
