Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2014 – May Week 1

Akdong Musician’s (AKMU) “200%” repeats as No. 1 this week and becomes the first song on our chart in nearly six years to score a perfect 1000 point in a week. The last song did it was Lee Hyori’s “U-Go-Girl” in August week 3 of 2008.

Due to the tragic ferry accident, Korea is still in a state of mourning.  K-pop activities have been put on hold with no TV music programs or no major releases. Therefore, we don’t find a lot of new songs entering the chart and movement is rather minimal. By default, AKMU’s “200%” was the last hit song before this stoppage and will likely continue. Regardless, AKMU’s first album has achieved great success and deserved to be on top. Congratulations.

Besides the chart topping “200%,” AKMU again has another song in the top 10 this week as “Melted” moves up eight spots to No. 9.  This is a ballad with a piano intro and rhythmic guitar melody.  The lyrics ask young children to feel the pure and innocent music.

There are two other new songs in the top 10 this week.  Moving up 13 spots to No. 3 is JYP’s female duo 15&. They scored their first top three hit with “Can’t Hide It.”  Written by JYP himself, this mid-tempo R&B song features the duo’s more mature and powerful vocals. The easy to sing along lyrics are about young couples experiencing love and cannot hide it.

Singer-songwriter Eddy Kim scores his first ever top 10 hit with “The Manual,” moving up seven spots to No. 7. A former contestant of Super Star K4, Eddy Kim was signed by MYSTIC89 and released his first mini-album “The Manual.”  The title song of the same name has an acoustic guitar melody and features Eddy Kim’s outstanding vocal. The MV of this song was filmed in scenic Amsterdam.
