Fans Pick Top 6 Soundtracks Used in “Fated to Love You”

Now halfway through the drama, MBC’s “Fated to Love You” is gathering much attention for the wittiness of their choice in background music (BGM). Many of these were soundtracks used in previous dramas and films that add to the comical nature of a scene. Out of the countless number of tracks used, fans picked the BEST SIX. Do you know any of them? 

Episode 1: “Chuno” OST – “Change” by Gloomy 30s

In the first episode of the drama, there was a scene where Lee Gun (Jang Hyuk) took off the jacket of his suit to get rid of the large dog that had been chasing after him. During this scene, the song, “Change” by the Gloomy 30s got played. This added to the hilarity of the scene because the song that had been used to increase the tension of the action scenes in “Chuno” was used while Jang Hyuk was running away from a dog. The track inevitably created the connection between Jang Hyuk’s character in “Fated to Love You” and his character from “Chuno.” This was a nice attention-gatherer for the first episode, as it became the scene of interest that viewers focused on in the drama’s first episode.

Episode 4: “Snail” by Panic

In the fourth episode of the drama, Lee Gun (Jang Hyuk) consults a therapist because he is unable to accept the marriage that had been forced upon him due to a one night stand. He described Mi Young (Jang Nara) as a scary snail that kept sticking onto him. Surprisingly the background music that was on during this scene was “Snail” by Panic. With a mentally unstable Lee Gun and the computer graphic of the snail on the screen, the addition of “Snail” in the background made this scene one of the most memorable in the entire drama. Another interesting story behind the track is that the director of the drama is Lee Dong Yoon, who happens to be the younger brother of singer Lee Juk, who had been a member of Panic. This relationship showed the wit behind the production team.

Episode 6: “Titanic” OST – “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion

In episode six, the two main characters officially start their married life. Almost by accident, Lee Gun ends up giving a backhug to Mi Young, and this served as their first intimate contact since their one night stand. As soon as Lee Gun gave Mi Young a backhug, the song most known for the similar position, “My Heart Will Go On” from the film “Titanic” played in the background. The song, which is known by the majority of the population, enhanced the impact of their first “skin-relationship” in the drama.

Episode 6: “Nameless Gangster” OST and “Old Boy” OST – “I Heard It Through the Rumors” by Jang Ki Ha and the Faces and “Cries and Whispers”

Later in the episode, Lee Gun finds out that the company that had bought his factory in Yeoul Island, which happens to be Mi Young’s hometown, was planning to dump waste at the location. He goes back to the CEO of the company to get the factory back. With Lawyer Hong (Park Jin Woo) and Secretary Tak (Choi Dae Chul) behind him, tension rises as the two parties face each other. At this moment, the well-known soundtrack from “Nameless Gangster,” called “I Heard It Through the Rumors” by Jang Ki Ha and the Faces, gets played in the background. This essentially made this scene a parody of the film.

Also, as the tension kept rising, the BGM changed to the “Old Boy” soundtrack, “Cries and Whispers,” adding to the comic nature of the scene as Lee Gun and his party attempted to look tougher in order to win back the factory.

Episode 8: “Que Sera Sera” by Doris Day and “Having an Affair” by GG (G-Dragon and Park Myung Soo)

In this episode, Sarah (Wang Ji Won) unexpectedly returns to Korea, which makes everything awkward for Lee Gun and Mi Young. In order to alleviate this awkwardness, Lee Gun turns on the radio. Then the infamous radio scene played out. First they listened to Jung Joon Young’s radio show, where he began to scold men that had cheated on their girlfriends. Jung Joon Young, who is a known fan of Jang Nara, even suggested that women who have boyfriends like these should ditch them and come to him instead. Then GG’s “Having an Affair” started playing, which made Lee Gun even more anxious.

When he changed the channel, a softer, ballad type of music came on, so both were relieved. However, it ended up being Doris Day’s “Que Sera Sera.” As the phrase, “sera sera” repeatedly came on as the radio started buffering, it seemed like they kept listening to “Sarah Sarah,” which frustrated Lee Gun enough for him to turn the radio off. This scene was funny because Lee Gun, who was starting to have feelings for Mi Young, was trying to alleviate the situation, but ended up making it worse. This also gave a nickname for Wang Ji Won’s character—“que sera.”

Episode 10: “The Successful Story of a Bright Girl” OST – “Love Song” by Jo Jang Hyuk

In this episode, the divorce papers between Lee Gun and Mi Young gets released to the public, and they end up getting trapped in their respective homes. Both characters dress up as high school students to escape. What gathered much attention was Jang Nara’s parody of herself from “The Successful Story of a Bright Girl,” the drama where she had also costarred alongside Jang Hyuk. In the episode, she took the alias of Cha Yang Soon, her character’s name from her old drama. During the scene, the soundtrack from the drama, “Love Song” by Jo Jang Hyuk, got played, once again showing the production team’s wit. (You can read more about the scene here)

The production team behind “Fated to Love You” revealed that “There are many fans that are wondering where the ideas behind the BGM come from. There are many times where they come up during the script meetings, but most of them come from director Lee Dong Yoon and music director Ji Pyung Kwon as they are making the final edits.
