20 Signs You Might Be Addicted to K-Pop

If you find yourself waking up with crumbs on your mouth from a stale, red bean pastry, a dead laptop lying beside you in bed, your pajamas riding up to show a pair of B2ST socks and your hand still poised in mid-tweet about your bias (all the while mumbling something that sounds a lot like “Hey, I’m Mr. Simple”), then it might be time to reevaluate your life a bit. If you are starting to think that you have lost control a little, then read ahead to see, “20 Signs You Might Be Addicted to K-pop.”

1. You catch yourself saying “Omo!” and “Aigoo!” at random times throughout the day.

2. You cannot go a full day without getting on Tumblr… at least twice.

3. You have a special “K-pop only” account on Twitter. You don’t share that page with anyone who knows you in real life!

4. You make bad jokes that only K-pop fans can understand. (Ex. “What was T.O.P.‘s name when he was younger? TEEN TOP!)

5. You don’t even notice now when guy idols are using eyeliner and makeup. In fact, you have no problem admitting they look pretty.

6. You pretend to love Korean food, even though the only thing you can actually eat is ramen.

7. You can sing, rap and dance the entire routine to SHINee‘s song “Lucifer” all by yourself, without missing even one beat.

8. On your mp3 player, you have way more Korean songs than songs in your native language.

9. You used to dream of taking a trip to Europe. Now, your dream trip is going to all the famous music companies and television stations in Seoul to see if you can spot some stars. Probability of this actually happening? Not likely.

10. When someone says “fantastic,” you can’t help but follow it up by shouting “…BABY!”

11. You would rather save money for your group’s re-package album than buy staples like toilet paper.

12. You can name all 13 original member of Super Junior in less than 10 seconds, but you can’t pass the math quiz at school.

13. You have spent more money on concert tickets than some families spend on their entire annual food budget.

14. You have saved more pictures of your bias to your computer than of your own boyfriend or girlfriend. Most likely, because you actually consider them your own boyfriend or girlfriend.

15. You refer to “selfies” as “selcas” and find it perfectly acceptable for adults to pose for the camera until just the right angle is found, flash a cute sign, then photoshop as needed to draw whiskers and kitten ears on themselves. Heart stickers in the corner are also optional, but personally I just think that’s too much.

16. You can name every single song that 2NE1 has recorded since debut, but you can’t name three current songs from your own country.

17. You remember the names of idol’s pets more than you do your own cousins.

18. You have spent time making numerous fake email accounts in order to vote online for your group.

19. You’ve cried at least once when you’ve seen your bias hug, sing for, dance with or kiss another fan.

20. You have secretly practiced doing “aegyo” and “gwiyomi”  in front of a mirror- don’t deny it! We’ve all been there.

Whether you are a newcomer to the world of K-pop or have been here a while, the simple truth of the matter is that K-pop allows us a world where we can express our individuality without being caught up in the expectations of others. If you’re a guy who wants to start wearing BB Cream in order to have perfect, porcelain skin that would make Kevin from UKiss weep with envy,  then you go ahead!  If you want to say things like “Daebak” or “Wae” or “Gomawoyo” at school or work (even though no one there speaks Korean), then go ahead and express yourself through random Korean phrases that people learn from dramas!

As long as you don’t let K-pop completely take over your life, your hobbies and interests play a great part in who you are and help motivate you for the future. If we focus on maintaining a healthy balance, then we can move on to fully embrace the world of K-pop for what it is-  a colorful, funny, unique place where artistic creativity and inspiration meet to form the magical world of music.
