Five Underrated K-Dramas You Should Watch

It’s the weekend! For many people, that means parties and outings. But the weather is getting colder, and you’re totally exhausted from school or work. Why not settle in with a K-drama? But not just any K-drama – you’ve already been there and done that. So here’s our list of five underrated dramas you should watch! We’ll sort them by mood.

Need a good cry?

“Third Hospital” (or “The Third Ward”) is a 20 episode medical drama that aired on tvN in 2012. It’s about a hospital that is merging Easter and Western medicine practices and the two brothers (Kim Seung Woo, Oh Ji Ho) who head each side and are forced to work together.  Then factor in a love interest or two and you have a drama, but not all is as it seems. The romance doesn’t take away from the plot which was able to keep the humor along with the melodrama parts. A warning: Keep tissues handy, you’ll need them. This drama also starred Kim Min Jung and Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung.

Want a light-hearted romantic comedy?

All About My Romance is based on a novel of the same name (go pick it up if you can read Korean) that aired on SBS in 2013. It starred Shin Ha Kyun and Lee Min Jung as politicians from opposing parties who fall in love and end up dating secretly because there is no way this could go wrong, right? Wrong, SHK’s character has a nosy journalist (Han Chae Ah) who has a crush on him and LMJ has her own from an aide who was her sister’s brother-in-law (Park Hee Soon) If you’re looking for a light-hearted comedy to watch then this one is for you.

Want to know what really goes on in the world of K-drama?

Watch “King Of Dramas.” Kim Myung Min stars in this behind the scenes drama within a drama as a fallen producer who is trying to get his way back to the top with the help of a newbie writer (Jung Ryeo Won) whose debut drama may be the very thing to resurrect his failed career. Ever wanted to watch a drama that gives you a look at what may go on behind the scenes of drama making? Well, King of Dramas may be for you. Super Junior’s Siwon stars as a top star actor alongside Oh Ji Eun. Side note: You will NEVER look at product placement the same again. Trust me. (Song in video is “All Looks Like You” by Melody Day)

Want something totally different?

Check out “Nine: Nine Times Time Travel.” In this tvN drama from 2013, Lee Jin Wook stars as a news anchor who finds magical incense that take him back in time. The series follows him as he tries to change events of the past, but his meddling has consequences he never counted on which affects everyone around him including himself. Nine shows a different view of time traveling and has a unique way of telling Park Sun Woo’s story from his family problems and his relationship with his colleague (Jo Yoon Hee). If you’re not into romantic comedies or heavy melodramas then you should try “Nine”. Need another push? It’s from the same writers as “Queen In Hyun’s Man”.

Watching with the family?

Choi Jung Won starred in “Stars Falling From the Sky” as a selfish and materialistic insurance agent who ends up taking care of her five siblings after their parents die. All of a sudden, she has to become a mother and learn to take care of others. Kim Ji Hoon plays a lawyer with abandonment issues  who falls in love with Choi Jung Won despite her many hardships. If you’re someone who likes a heartwarming family drama, then this 2010 drama is for you. You’ll enjoy the children just as much, if not more, than their adult costars.
