PSY's "Gangnam Style" Breaks YouTube Counter
PSY’s “Gangnam Style,” a 2012 sensation that took the world by storm, is still breaking records. On December 2, PSY’s video became too good for the YouTube counters, which were unable to keep up with the staggering amount of hits, which, as of December 3, number over 2.15 billion. YouTube announced that they would be implementing an upgrade to accommodate the most-viewed YouTube video in history.
YouTube posted on the video, “We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. ‘Gangnam Style’ has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade! Hover over the counter in PSY’s video to see a little math magic and stay tuned for bigger and bigger numbers on YouTube.”
Released on July 15 of 2012, “Gangnam Style” hit 100 million views in just 52 days, and this past May 31, the video became the first to reach two billion hits.
