“Seonam Girls' High School Investigators” Clarifies Message Behind Lesbian Kiss Scene

JTBC’s “Seonam Girls’ High School Investigators” pushed Korean television boundaries when it aired a kiss scene between two lesbian students on February 25.

As a subject that remains highly controversial in Korean society, homosexuality is rarely featured on major network broadcasts, leading many conservative viewers shocked at the scene’s inclusion in the episode.

In response to inquiries as to why a kiss scene between two females was included, a representative of “Seonam Girls High School Investigators” said, “Homosexuality is the first topic that producer Yeo Woon Hyuk wanted to deal with when we started working on ‘Seonam Girls’ High School Investigators.’ He of course worried about the reaction to the scene, but ultimately decided that it was a topic that needed to be discussed.”

The representative also added that their decision to include the scene was based on their experiences talking with homosexual students, saying, “The homosexual students we’ve met have said that they are treated unfairly at school. We do not believe it is our prerogative to judge whether these students are right or wrong. We therefore went ahead with the scene in the hopes that diversity can be accepted and embraced.”
