Highlights:

Bom (Go Ah Sung) and In Sang (Lee Joon) may be married now, but the Han household is still busy figuring out what the new status quo will be in tonight’s episode of “Heard It Through the Grapevine.” It turns out there isn’t really a protocol for how to deal with your teenaged daughter-in-law and her newborn son. And what will Jung Ho (Yoo Joon Sang) and Yeon Hee (Yoo Ho Jeong) tell the neighbors (and Jung Ho’s 1300 employees)?! Luckily, the more confused and flustered these characters get, the more entertaining this drama is.

These were my five favorite scenes of “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” episode five:

1. Jung Ho and Yeon Hee are so happy they’re crying

It’s possible that I’m a terrible person, because Jung Ho and Yeon Hee spent a good deal of this episode crying, and I spent all of that time laughing. Now, I understand why they’re upset—regardless of the circumstances, no parent can be 100% happy that their teenaged son is a husband and a father. But Jung Ho and Yeon Hee’s initial reactions to the news were so outrageously rude and ill-considered that I simply can’t feel sorry for them. I admit it: I find their suffering a bit enjoyable.

2. Bom talks to her family

The Seo family is such a breath of fresh air in this drama. To be sure, they’re not perfect. But they so clearly love and care about each other, and that makes watching their scenes a really wonderful experience. This phone conversation was especially great—I was so moved when Jin Ae thanked Bom for being her daughter. (Can you imagine Yeon Hee or Jung Ho ever saying that to In Sang?)

3. Jin Young meets one set of grandparents

Wow. It appears that even Jung Ho and Yeon Hee aren’t immune to the charms of a baby, as they (finally) meet their grandson and promptly fall in love. It’s such a lovely relief to see that even though they might feel ambivalent about Jin Young’s mother, they really do love Jin Young and want to be a part of his life.

4. In Sang and Bom revisit the fateful dorm room

It might be too soon after Jin Young’s birth for In Sang and Bom to have a proper wedding night, but they still manage to make it a special evening by revisiting the room where they conceived Jin Young. It’s such a lovely, bittersweet scene—indeed, one of my favorite aspects of this episode is how honest Bom is about her persistent slight unhappiness. Even though she loves In Sang and Jin Young, her life has been dramatically thrown off course, and it’s natural for her to come back to this room where that change started. Their first time in this room, Bom told In Sang that she was scared (of her feelings for him, of what might happen?). Now, she insists that she isn’t scared anymore. I wonder if it’s because everything she feared has already come to pass.

5. Bom meets some family friends

Finally, Bom is allowed to interact with people outside the immediate family circle! I loved this scene—I love how Bom refuses to be intimidated by Yeon Hee’s “friends,” even though one of them springs a surprise English test on her (I know from personal experience that surprise language tests are incredibly difficult and nerve-wracking!). Also fantastic was Bom bringing up her mother’s former occupation as an English tutor to explain her proficiency. I would love to see more of this sort of scene. I want to see how Bom presents herself to the strangers of the upper crust. I’m especially excited to see how she acts around In Sang’s friends. Basically, Jung Ho and Yeon Hee need to let their daughter-in-law out of the house so she can show everyone how awesome she is!

What did you think of this episode? Am I a bad person for laughing at Jung Ho and Yeon Hee’s pain, or did you laugh, too? Let us know in the comments below!
