Kim Woo Joo Sentenced to Prison for Evading Military Service by Claiming He Sees Ghosts
Singer Kim Woo Joo of hip hop group Old Time, who was indicted earlier this year for deliberately avoiding obligatory military service by claiming mental illness, has been sentenced to one year in prison.
On April 28, Judge Jo Jung Rae of the Seoul Central District Court said about Kim Woo Joo, “He deceived with the objective of avoiding or reducing his mandatory military service.”
Kim Woo Joo was charged with evading military service a total of 42 times from March 2012 until July 2014 by faking symptoms of mental illness.
While receiving medical treatment for his supposed mental illness, Kim Woo Joo claimed that he “started seeing ghosts eight years ago” and that he “saw a ghost, fainted out of shock, and was taken to the emergency room.”
The singer’s doctor diagnosed Kim Woo Joo with symptoms of “visual hallucinations, auditory hallucinations, and insomnia” and issued a medical certificate claiming that Kim Woo Joo needs at least one year of drug and psychiatric treatment. Kim Woo Joo submitted the certificate to the Office of Military Manpower Administration, but investigations proved that the singer had been lying about his symptoms.
