Gong Seung Yeon Talks about Off-Screen Relationship with Lee Jong Hyun

Gong Seung Yeon recently talked to Newsen about her relationship with her virtual husband Lee Jong Hyun from the MBC show “We Got Married” and its effect on her acting and love life.

Gong Seung Yeon has recently been appearing on television in two popular programs, the SBS drama “Heard it Through the Grapevine” and MBC‘s romance variety show “We Got Married.” On “Heard it Through the Grapevine,” which ended on June 2, she played a coy and ambitious young woman who dreamed of rising up in society. In comparison, she is seen flirting awkwardly with Lee Jong Hyun and is often described as being “like a bear” on “We Got Married.” In Korea, some people describe women as either like bears or foxes. Compared to experienced, flirtatious, and seductive foxes, women who are like bears are said to be less assertive and more innocent.

The young actress told Newsen that filming “We Got Married” has made her reflect on herself. “I’m always hearing people say that I’m like a bear. But is that really true? I’m not sure,” she says with a laugh. “Come to think of it, ‘We Got Married’ has taught me about who I really am as a person, so I’m grateful for that.”

The interviewer asks if that means that she’s become immersed in her virtual marriage to Lee Jong Hyun. “Lee Jong Hyun has helped me so much, so I’ve been able to really do it naturally,” she replies. “Over the time that we’ve been together, he’s said a lot of sweet romantic things to me, and I’ve gradually come to naturally say them too.”

Regarding their relationship off screen, she says, “Since we’re a married couple, isn’t it normal for us to keep in touch with each other? Honestly, it would be weird if I said we weren’t keeping in contact at all while we’re on the show together.”

She also provides some insights into the content of their text conversations. “We’ve become close friends,” she reveals. “Of course we talk about a lot of trivial things, but he also recommends things to me all the time.”

“Most of the time he’s saying things like, ‘Read this book’ or ‘Listen to this song.’ He says we have to keep learning.”

In real life, Lee Jong Hyun has always been kind and warm to Gong Seung Yeon. That’s why filming “We Got Married” with him is so enjoyable for her. “What woman wouldn’t be happy to be treated so well?” she asks. “Anyway, the amazing thing is that because I treat ‘We Got Married’ with Lee Jong Hyun as being sincere while we’re filming, it helps me when I’m acting. Even when I was working with my partner Kim Kwon on ‘Heard it Through the Grapevine,’ I’d sometimes think, ‘Oh yes, it felt like this.’ It’s helped a lot.”

When asked if she’s been seeing anyone lately, she shakes her head firmly. “I’m married now,” she says. “Who is a married woman going to date?”

Lastly, the interviewer asks her when she was last in a relationship. She replies with a surprising lack of hesitation. “It was two years ago. But right now I have my husband, Lee Jong Hyun. So it’s good,” she says, laughing shyly.
