"JYJ Law" Fails to Pass But Is Kept Under Consideration for Further Review

The “JYJ Law,” proposed to ban unreasonable blacklisting of stars, failed to pass in the Petition Examination Subcommittee of the Science, ICT and Future Planning Ministry.

Assemblywoman Choi Min Hee of the ministry declared that the “JYJ Law” will be kept under continual consideration despite its failure to be approved.

Members of the law review committee understood the purpose of the proposed law but thought that its contents needed further revision, along with specifying what groups would conduct review of these unreasonable actions.

Seo Sang Ki of the Saenuri Party stated, “It is true that we should protect [artists]. If this law is passed however, we might be biting off more than we can chew with having to solve the many complaints that viewers or the stars submit.”

Jeon Byung Hun of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy agreed, saying, “There may be an overuse of this law if enacted. I’m worried that, unlike its original purpose, this law may be used for the wrong reasons,” and pondered the “officialism” of this law.

Woo Sang Ho, another member of the same committee, stated, “Opinions of a specific fan club do not take into account all the other opinions out there. With that said, however, if people can undertake justifiable steps to ban blacklisting of stars, leaving the freedom of choice (to pick stars for TV appearances) untouched, this law may cause no problems at all.”

Meanwhile, the “JYJ Law” was proposed when JYJ members, Kim Jaejoong, Park Yoochun, and Kim Junsu, had a hard time appearing on music shows after leaving SM Entertainment.
