EXO, SHINee, and MFBTY Make MTV Iggy's Top 25 Albums Mid-Year Review

MTV Iggy recently posted a half-year round-up of the best 25 albums of this year so far as chosen by MTV Iggy staffers.

Hip hop trio MFBTY and SM labelmates SHINee and EXO were the only K-Pop groups to make the list with their albums “Wondaland,” “Odd,” and “Exodus,” respectively.

In the review, Tamar Herman salutes MFBTY’s ability to bend genres and create their own unique sound, “MFBTY exceeds the boundaries of genres and leaves no sound untouched and nothing unsaid in Wondaland, creating a sense of musical escapism through Korean and English.”

Also praised for taking risks was SHINee.”Being SM Entertainment’s more experimental male group, they delved into unconquered K-pop territory with their lead single ‘View:’ deep house,” Alexis Hodoyan-Gastelum writes, considering “Odd” a sort of rite of passage that “breaks their boy next door image and demands you to realize they’ve grown into mature, sexual men before your eyes.”

Adrienne Stanley compliments EXO’s ability to sing in both Korean and Mandarin while sounded “equally brilliant” in both languages, like in the two versions for “What If…” and “My Answer.” He also brings attention to track ‘Lady Luck,’ which he deems as “one of the hidden gems of the album” that “brilliantly combine[s] hip-hop with R&B.”

Congratulations to the three groups! 2015 is looking like a great year for K-pop.
