Korean Shaved Ice Desserts Are Total Calorie Bombs

Though shaved ice desserts are a favorite summer treat for Koreans, they have also been revealed to have more calories than a bowl of white rice.

Based on reports by the food industry on July 7, most shaved ice desserts are more than 260 kcal, which is higher than the 250 kcal of a bowl of rice.

Don’t be fooled by the green tea shaved ice desserts just because green tea is known to fight obesity, since they just add on to the calories.

Out of the 26 shaved ice desserts observed, Tous Les Jours’  Green Tea Snow Loving had the most calories, 950Kcal in 690g per serving. This is four times the average calories of a bowl of white rice. It also contains 9g of saturated fat, which is 60% of an adult’s daily intake.

These green tea desserts contain more calories because more ingredients containing sugar are added to ease out the bitter taste of the green tea.

“Most shaved ice desserts that are currently sold are high calorie because they contain too much sugar,” a consumer group representative said. “We recommend that people with weak heart systems or on a diet check the calorie, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium content.”
