Poppin' Hyun Joon Says Hip Hop in

Poppin’ Hyun Joon, who is credited for being one of the first hip hop artists in Korea, talked about “Show Me the Money.”

Poppin’ Hyun Joon is coming out with a new album for the first time in six years on September 7. The album is titled “I’M HYUNJOON,” and it tells his own story of being a broadcaster, choreographer, graffiti artist, painter, and movie actor.

During a recent interview with OSEN, the veteran hip hop artist was asked about the recently popular audition programs such as “Dancing 9” and “Show Me the Money.” He said that he was thankful that the media deals with such genres of music now and that he’s happy about it. However, he also added that he hoped that the competitive aspect won’t take away from the music.

Specifically, he says, “In hip hop, there is everything from hood, respect, diss, and battles. In programs like ‘Show Me the Money,’ the competition is important, so you have to diss the other competitors and that’s how they choose who wins. I’m disappointed that only those aspects of the culture are shown.”

He adds that the show lacks the hood and respect components of hip hop, and says, “Of course, if you do that, the program will be more interesting. So I guess that’s why programs only use diss and battles. I think things are progressing in an abnormal direction, so it’s saddening.”
