PSY Opens Up About New Album and the Pressure from "Gangnam Style"
On December 10, singer PSY sat down for an interview with U.S. news outlet Entertainment Weekly to talk about his seventh full-length album, “Vol. 7.”
“I decided to release a full-length album so people could learn more about me through a variety of songs,” PSY said. “Rather than focusing on the album as a whole, I concentrated on one song at a time.”
One of the album’s title tracks is “Daddy” featuring 2NE1‘s CL. “I was inspired by the movie ‘Austin Powers’ in making the music video,” PSY revealed.
“I was really happy about the success of ‘Gangnam Style,'” he continued. “‘Gangnam Style’ went viral all over the world in 2012 and now has more than 2 billion views on YouTube. “But I also felt a lot of pressure. I thought, ‘I will never be able to overcome that height again.’ So I concentrated on finding myself and expressing myself through my music instead.”
“Daddy” reached No. 97 on the Billboard Singles Chart after its release, making him the first Asian artist to have four singles in a row on the Billboard Hot 100. He also reached No. 1 in many domestic music charts and is currently preparing for his end-of-year concert “All Night Stand 2015 – Concert Got PSY” on December 24-26 at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Arena.
