Comedienne Jo Hye Ryun Reveals Her Painful Past

Comedienne Jo Hye Ryun’s hidden family story touches hearts of the viewers.

On the January 7 broadcast of TV Chosun’s “What Is Mom,” Jo Hye Ryun’s mother Choi Bok Soon visited her daughter’s home.

On this episode, Choi Bok Soon stunned Jo Hye Ryun when she said, “I never loved you.” She went on to say, “I had four daughters already. Then I had you, another daughter. Do you think I was happy to see you? I hated that I bore another daughter. So, I placed you on your stomach and put a heavy blanket over you and another blanket on top. But you didn’t die.” Jo Hye Ryun’s mother spoke with difficulty having lived through an era where giving birth to boys was more highly valued than having girls. Jo Hye Ryun further explained that her mother experienced great financial difficulties due to having to support her children.

Jo Hye Ryun started tearing up hearing the story from her mother. She confessed to her children, “I never heard my mother tell me that she loved me. She always scolded me saying that I was wasting her money. That’s why I’m not good to my own kids.”
