Byun Yo Han to Make Musical Debut With “Hedwig”
Actor Byun Yo Han will be starring in his first ever musical this year with “Hedwig: New Makeup.” It is said to be a stylish rock musical with a long history. “Hedwig” first premiered in 2005 and this year marks its 11th year anniversary and tenth season. Throughout its history, some of the famous castings for “Hedwig” include Yoon Do Hyun, Cho Seung Woo, Jo Jung Suk, and Jung Moon Sung.
Different from the past characters, Byun Yo Han’s depiction of Hedwig reveals a melancholic appearance with disheveled hair and stylish makeup. Byun Yo Han is working hard to depict a Hedwig that is different from the past, showing the character’s hidden pain and sadness.
Byun Yo Han commented on his role, “I am happy to be cast among very distinguished senior actors. I don’t think it will be enough to promise that I will work hard to not ruin the reputation of this project and previous senior actors. I am going to bring to life a distinct Hedwig that the audience will be able to sympathize with, just as the previous senior actors had done for the past 11 years.”
“Hedwig” is a musical that features two characters, but due to the powerful influence of Hedwig as a character, it might be considered a one man show. As a result, the capabilities of the actor playing Hedwig have a dramatic impact on the play itself as well as the audience watching the performance. Because it is a one man show, there is a lot of pressure riding on actor Byun Yo Han.
Byun Yo Han revealed, “It would be a lie to say that there is no pressure. However, with each day that I become Hedwig, I strangely become more comfortable. I think I need to stay far away from the views and expectations of those around me. The most important thing is the audience. I think of the audience as the other actor that I synchronize with. Although I am a little worried about the performance, I become a little more excited when I think about that moment.”
Byun Yo Han’s “Hedwig: New Makeup” is expected to premiere this upcoming March.
