SBS's

After six years of broadcast, SBS’s “K-Pop Star” wrapped up its final season on April 9. Throughout the years, the popular audition show left its mark on television as it maintained popularity and hype even with the recent fade out of audition programs.

Shortly after, it was reported that the show, having immense brand power, had earned 30 billion won (approximately $26.4 million) from commercials during broadcast alone for the sixth season. Since then, SBS clarified the statement saying that the profits were exaggerated. However, considering each premium 15-second advertisement nets around 3 billion won (approximately $2.64 million) and each episode of the show features four to six advertisements, it is entirely possible that “K-Pop Star” came close to the reported numbers.

In a recent interview, the producer of the show commented on the end of the show and the end to a strong, valuable brand. “I’ve been asked many times if this is really the end for ‘K-Pop Star.’ When these questions arise, I have to think of the viewers’ perspectives,” he said. “I am grateful for the interest and love for the show over the years. However, currently, there are no plans to produce another season. Unless there is an overwhelming public reaction for a new season, the show will end here,” the producer continued, revealing that the future of the program was in the hands of the viewers.
