PENTAGON's Hui Talks About Songwriting And The Success Of

On the November 11 episode of MBC Standard FM’s “Idol Radio,” PENTAGON’s Hui appeared as a guest.

He was on the show as part of the “Makers” segment, appearing not as an idol but as a music producer and songwriter. Hui has participated in producing and writing many of PENTAGON’s songs, including their recent hit “Shine” and latest track “Naughty Boy,” as well as Wanna One’s “Energetic” and “Produce 101 Season 2’s” “Never.”

When asked which song took him the shortest amount of time to write, he picked “Energetic.” He then picked “Never” as the song that had taken the most amount of revision. About their huge success, he said, “Rather than feeling like I found a 10,000 won bill [about $10] on the street, it’s like I found a piece of gold on the street and I’m carrying it around in my pocket.”

He continued, “I’d been working hard since my debut, staying up nights working, but everything seemed to be in darkness without a single ray of light. There were a lot of times when it was difficult, mentally speaking, but I was happiest when I realized [the success] could make people more aware of PENTAGON.”

Hui added, “Including this month, it’s been 2 years and 1 month since we made our debut. The number of songs I’ve written in that time comes to about one song a month. It’s more than I thought.”

When the DJ, BTOB’s Ilhoon, asked him how he felt when it came time to share one of his songs with the world, he said, “I literally shake with nerves. I get really nervous.” Ilhoon, who has produced songs for BTOB such as their recent song “Friend,” related to the feeling, adding, “I also get really nervous and bite my nails.”

Hui concluded, “Recently, I’ve come to realize that being in the recording studio and performing the music I’ve made is really fun. I hope that I can live for a long time making music.”
