TWICE To Appear On Famous Japanese Year-End Show 2 Years In A Row

TWICE will appear on Japan’s historic New Year’s Eve music show Kōhaku Uta Gassen, which literally translates to Red and White Song Battle.

On November 14, NHK revealed the lineup for its 69th annual music festival on its website. According to the list, TWICE is the only K-pop group to appear on the show for the past two years, and is the first K-pop girl group  that also debuted in Japan to appear on the show for two years in a row.

TWICE first appeared on the show in 2017, and performed the Japanese version of “TT.” It was the first time in six years for a K-pop group to appear on the show after TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, and KARA all performed in 2011.

This is the 69th anniversary of the music festival, and it is the representing year-end program of Japan. It scores an average viewership ratings of 40 percent and highest 81 percent. The artists are divided into two teams, Red Team and White Team, and battle against each other.

TWICE released their second Japanese single “Candy Pop” in February this year. The album was certified platinum, making it their third certified platinum album following their debut best album and first Japanese single released last year. Their third single “Wake Me Up,” which was released in May this year, was certified as double platinum. “Wake Me Up” is the first foreign female artist’s single to be certified as double platinum in Japan.

The group also released their first Japanese studio album, “BDZ” on September 12. The album took first place seven times in a row in Oricon’s daily album chart, and topped Oricon’s monthly album chart. TWICE successfully finished their first Japanese arena tour, where they visited four cities and performed eight concerts. They recently announced a Japanese Dome tour for 2019.

Kōhaku Uta Gassen will air on December 31. Stay tuned for more updates!
