Viewership Ratings Revealed For Competitive New Year's Eve Time Slot Between SBS Drama Awards, KBS Drama Awards, And MBC Gayo Daejejun
On December 31, the last day of 2018, all three public broadcasting channels held live end-of-year ceremonies to ring in the new year.
Around 9 p.m. KST, KBS broadcast the 2018 KBS Drama Awards, SBS broadcast the 2018 SBS Drama Awards, and MBC broadcast the 2018 MBC Gayo Daejejun.
According to the January 1 report from Nielsen Korea, the 2018 KBS Drama Awards took first in the time slot and was the only broadcast to top 10 percent in viewership ratings that day. The first part of the ceremonies received 9.6 percent and the second part received 10.8 percent.
The 2018 SBS Drama Awards and the 2018 MBC Gayo Daejejun then tied for second place with exactly the same viewership ratings for Part 1 and Part 2 (6.5 percent and 7.1 percent). However, SBS edged out MBC when it came to metropolitan area viewership ratings (7.7 and 8.0 percent versus 6.5 and 7.2 percent). The highest rated moment for SBS (11.4 percent) came when “The Last Empress” won the Top Excellence Awards for Acting in a Wed-Thurs Drama.
When it came to viewership ratings for 29-49-year-olds, the demographic most favored by advertisers, the 2018 MBC Gayo Daejejun came first in its time slot with 3.8 and 5.6 percent.
In the same demographic, the 2018 SBS Drama Awards edged out the 2018 KBS Drama Awards (3.4 and 4.1 percent versus 3.1 and 3.5 percent), suggesting that the KBS Drama Awards were viewed by older demographics and the SBS Drama Awards more popular with the younger demographic.
